Question - Transmission removal

Some of you might have read my thread on a whole car paint job for my TTA. What's the "easiest" way to pull the transmission out?

I won't be driving it up on ramps because I haven't started it in several years, so I was thinking of putting it up on jack stands and removing the trans from underneath, similar to what I did when I pulled the fuel tank quite a few years ago to replace the fuel pump. Does that make sense?

I'm still in the process of making room in my garage so I can start taking pictures, and trying to convince a few of my gear-head friends and family members to help me when I'm ready.

Note: I do have the full set of GM shop manuals that I bought after I got the car.

Thanks........roughly how high should the car be raised in order to ensure I'm allowing enough room to get the trans down and out from under the car? I can do some measuring, but thought someone who has done it might know. I need to see if my jack stands will raise it up high enough.

The way i did mine in my 87 Buick T was to max out all four stands (truck stands best) and then use the jack under the front cross member to jack the front higher if necessary to slide out the trans. You also need a good low profile jack and a block of wood under the pan to support it on the way down. Your other option is a cheap transmission jack from harbor freight but option 1 works just fine. You need about 20” of height with the trans pan on the floor, I put a towel down do I didn’t scratch the pan sliding it out from under the car.

Thanks for that excellent information. I have a large 'sheet' of carpeting under one of my other cars ('70 GTO) that I was thinking of moving over to use under the TTA when I do this to avoid the pan scratching potential. By coincidence, by brother in law just stopped by to get an update from me...he previously offered to help remove it and he has a lower profile jack than I do, so we'll probably use that. Now that I have that 20" number to work with, we're going to see which one of us has higher jack stands. I have a fluid evacuator, so I plan on removing the trans fluid from the top first before we get started.

Don't forget the 3' long ratchet extension you need to reach the top bolts... I use a swivel on the end and put tape around it on the loose side.
