Hey everyone, haven't been on here in a while, so good to see forum is getting some use. This topic seems like a good one to jump in on. It's fun to see the "yung uns" having a healthy debate. Anyways... There are mostly option and some cosmetic differences between the GTA and Trans AM. TTA is a completely different animal with its own unique VIN, so very easy to spot a clone or a GTA with TTA emblems, just look at the VIN, if it starts with 1G2 and has Turbo emblems and 20TA badges it’s a fake. GTA's vs Trans Am's however are basically just an option package difference. The GTA was considered flag ship or top line in the Firebird series. It came pretty much loaded with all available options, except for leather and T-tops. Those were the only buyer selected options for the GTA. The Trans am had brake duct cooling vents in the front fenders just behind the front wheels from 1982-1990. The GTA did not have those ducts. In 1991-92 both the T/A and GTA had slick fenders. The GTA had unique seats, dubbed in the catalogs as " Fully Articulating Sport Seats." They had the "ET" looking head rest that was telescoping and had power inflatable lumbar, and side bolsters, along with a rocking feature to give the driver and passengers thigh support. I believe these were available as an option for the Trans Am in 1987, when the GTA was introduced into the lineup, but I think they may have been GTA exclusive 1988-92, as I have never seen a Trans am with the GTA seats from the factory. GTA's also had the UT4 radio with redundant steering wheel controls and PASS Key anti-theft standard. WS6 suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes were also standard, not so in the Tans AM. GTA also came standard with 16x8 cross lace aluminum wheels and 245/50 16 Z rated tires standard. Most GTA options were available on the Trans AM, but that don't make a Trans Am a GTA. Both cars had unique RPO order codes. The GTA was Y84 and the Trans Am was W61. You can always add whatever non GTA parts and emblems you would like and make your Trans Am a GTA clone, but you can't change your RPO data sheet that tells the whole truth about the origin of your vehicle and its factory options. This info is mostly from memory as I couldn't dig out my dealer catalogs from those years, so I may be missing some minute details.
