Engine miss under boost

echostatic

Turbooo
Hello all, it's been a good while, but I was hoping to get some feedback on a really annoying issue I've been having.

Sometimes I will get a miss under boost, if I push it past about 5psi or so. Sometimes, this will cause the check engine light to flicker, but store no code. On a couple of occasions, I have had a bad intake backfire as well. Bad enough once to blow the intake coupling apart at the MAF and filter once (blowing the honeycomb air smoother completely out of the MAF) and blowing the hose off the brake booster.

I don't know if this is related, but I've noticed some odd readings on the scanmaster. O2s read 000 or close to it when coasting, and sometimes when at a stop. When giving it a little gas, though, they will read up in the 700s or higher. Cross counts are, of course, very slow to increase when cruising or stop increasing completely when coasting. I'm not sure what is a normal amount of time for them to cycle back to 0 though. My BLM readings are also wacky. When sitting at a light, they tend to end up around 142, and can drop down to 115 when cruising.

Things I've tried replacing with no effect:

Spark plugs
o2 sensor
Coil pack
ECM
Chip

Some parts are fairly new, like the fuel pump (walbro 340) and spark plug wires (replaced in 2007). I didn't mind throwing some parts at it, since it needed new plugs anyway and I have no idea how old the coil pack was, but I'm running out of ideas.

And an unrelated question, would an intercooler not getting much airflow cause overheating in high 80 degree weather? No idea what's going on there.

Did you ever get your car fixed after the accident?
I know this is unrelated, but I was curious.

Oh yeah, I got it fixed, and fully repainted. It was all pretty darn cheap too! I haven't put the emblems back on or anything yet, but it's looking good.

How tightly should they be gapped for high boost? I'm running about 16lbs ATM on a 60-61mm turbo (forget exactly which one I put in there, it's in an old post somewhere...)

"Kinda" is a good way to put it. I had a similar problem for a while, but it was a bad MAF. (The scanmaster MAF readings aren't getting wonky this time though.) It never really has run properly since the rebuild, though.

Okay, so what I'm thinking is the Cam sensor is 180* out. It would run, but poorly. At least maybe the hall effect switch needs adjustment.

Would it run consistently poorly? For a day or two after I turned the boost up to 16lbs, I could go WOT and it would run pretty smoothly. Not so much now.

This is tough to diagnose over the internet. I would still check the cam sensor position.I would check the crank sensor and ignition module too.

Did you figure what was the issue...I have a similar problem. No scan tools. I ordered a new coil pack and will be getting new plugs.

I haven't yet, I get distracted too easily. It's been getting worse though, I'm suspecting the ignition module at the moment... I've never heard of one before tta299 mentioned it. Is that located behind the engine, under the coil pack? It looks like that might be what the other end of wire harness connected to the coil pack is connected to.
