120 speedo??

Good evening everyone...

I appreciate all of the info you helped me out with on the TTA I was looking at buying. Ultimately, the price was too high and I continue my search for an f-body.

I do have a question regarding a 1989 Trans Am I'm considering buying. I know its not a TTA, but I'm hoping someone might have some knowledge on this topic.

The speedo shown in the pictures of this car goes up to 120MPH. I thought that the speedo in the T/A's went to 140.

I've seen some info stating the the 120 speedo was on V6 (Firebird) models and the 140 speedo was on V8 models (T/A and Formula). I've seen other info that stated that the 140 speedo was an option on the T/A's.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

The car is VERY clean inside and out, top and bottom, and I would have no reason to believe that the stated mileage of just over 28,000 is not true. However, the 120 speedo has me wondering.

I appreciate any info that anyone can give me.

Thanks!!

My guess is it's a base transam not a GTA the decals on the rear bumper and sail panels along with the front fender extractors are not GTA pieces.
with the five speed I think it's a 5.0 motor not the 5.7. the steering wheel control radio puzzles me alittle as I thought it might be a GTA only item but could have been an option on the Base Transam. I'll see if I can decode the PSID. it would help if I could print the picture ledgibly

Thanks everyone. I think I figured it out. According to a press release by Pontiac for the 1988 model year, the Trans Am came standard with a 5.0 V8, Throttle Body Injection, and a manual transmission. This set up came with a 120 MPH speedometer. The optional automatic transmission came paired with the Tuned Port Injection V8. This set up came with the 140 MPH speedo. I found this info in a book titled "High Performance Firebirds 1982 - 1988"

Thanks everyone for your help!
