advice on vehicle lift

OK so I was just sayin how I wish I had a vehicle lift and today a flyer for a local autostore shows one on sale

It is a shur-lift brand 3 ton 2 post lift. It has a 230V AC electric /hydraulic power pack. Lifts car 6 feet. On sale for $1999.

I know nothing about lifts, is this the kind I want?? Only two posts?? Doesn't that seem a bit unstable?? What about a four post or a ramp style lift???

Please advise as I know nothing and would like to get a good deal if this is it.

Two post lifts must be bolted to the concrete. I have a 4 post lift which just sits on the concrete. It even comes with a set of wheels if you need to move it around once it is assembled. Here is a link to the company I bought mine from. They have quite a bit of educational information on their site. I bought the "Direct Lift Pro Park 8 Plus" because it is a little taller than a standard lift and I can walk under it with plenty of room. There are definately plus and minus for both.
2 post plus...Easy tire change, more access to entire underbody
4 post plus...Suspension not hanging in the air if you decide to park another car underneath, don't need 15" worth of concrete to anchor the posts etc.
I have a 4 post...no regrets!
 
2 post here. No stability issues with any vehicles. Much easier to work on the cars. 4 posts can get in the way of exhaust changes, suspension work, and things like that.

I have a Backyard Buddy 4-post lift: Car Lifts for the home garage. Backyard Buddy 4 Post Free Standing Automotive Lifts It is more expensive than others out there, but its very well made in the USA & very heavy duty, you definitely get what you pay for. It came with rolling jack platforms for doing tire rotations, brake work,etc with a caster kit to move the lift if need be.. I love 2-post lifts, but I have a post tension slab and are unable to drill in my garage. Just research & read reviews, there are many lifts out here to suit your needs.
 
I have 2. 4 post lifts from gregsmithequipment.com
They are direct lift with the newer lock system.
 
I have a Kwik lift. Its a ramp lift, and only lifts the car a few feet. But for oil changes and detail work it is good.
 
Two post lift here, mine is symetrical, would by a-symetrical if I had a "do-over". also I have to drive up in two 2x10's to get the arms under the TTA. Other thing to look at is door opening access with car on lift, mine is not enough. Mounted to 4" slab no issues in 10 years.
Most of the work I do could not be done easily on a four post.
 
I never really thought about how thick my garage floor needs to be, or opening doors while on the lift..

Thanks for the tips I am gonna do some research and decide.

I have the same one ... No regrets ...I was told before I bought mine that there is no such thing as the perfect lift.. Just depends on what u plan on using it more for..... The for post you can also get a jack tray so you can do tires, brakes and such...
 
aww man I still fon't have a lift, sure would be nice since I seem to jack up the car a whole lot these days.....
 
I have a 2post lift from Greg smith lifts and about to get a 4post. I have 8inches of concrete with fiber and floorheat in it.
12ft ceilings in garage and 3 garage doors that open properly for the present and future lift(s).
I like both lifts but I get most work done on my 2post. 4 post is great 4 installing subframe connectors. (i worked inmany shops with both lifts)
If your building a garage with floor heat, make sure you plan for your lift placement.. many many pictures and measurements...
