A few months ago I started getting a mystery knock at idle. My mechanic used a stethoscope, but had trouble telling if it was the AC or the alternator. We figured it would become more obvious over time.
I was with our local Pontiac club last weekend and they suggested putting on the headlights and rear defogger to create more of a load and see what happens. The knocking got considerably worse, so the consensus is that the alternator bearings are going bad.
I see that Kirban sells a non-rebuilt alternator for our cars that is only a few dollars more than the rebuilts at the local parts stores. Does anyone have any experience with the one from Kirban?
