Alum Spare Wheel - Who has one???

Our cars have the code for the Alum Spare wheel like the 89-92 1LE cars. Unfortunately mine does not.

I want to take a poll and see what everybody has in their cars.

Mine is Steel.

Well #850 has a steel one(my guess is it's original).

Never checked the spare in my other one.

And on a side note my 89 GTA had both the alum spare and the alum driveshaft(both long gone)

Well, I asked around as well in the past and seems like no one actually have the aluminium spare for some reason.

I have the steel and it never been used until I had a flat tire last year.

#630 has one, but thats only because I bought it! It was missing when I bought the car and assumed all the TTA's had it given the RPO code! :confused:

What size did you get? I picked up one at the junkyard, brought it home, and realized it was a 14 inch. I didn't pull off any of my rims, but it looks like it might not fit on the back. I guess the 1LE was 15 inch. I tried looking it up in the parts catalog, and I couldn't get any information on a part number or even if there are two sizes.
Anybody else????

The size is 195/75-14. From what I understand, there was only one aluminum spare tire ever made. It was used for the N64 optioned cars. Why some, most, or all of the TTA dont have this spare is a mystery. If the RPO is on the car, I would think GM would have put it in.

The 195/75-14 size is what was used on the 85 to 88 Trans Ams/GTAs/Formulas/Z-28s & IROCS. It will fit the 10.5 inch rotors on the front and rear of the car. I found one of these, but it did not fit over the larger rear rotors on our cars. I did not try the fronts after that. To get it to fit on many of our cars, GM used the larger (15inch) steel wheel like the 89 and up GTA (uses the same rear disc as ours).

What is more interesting is I did a pole on the 1LE message board and all of the 3rd Gen 1LE owners have indicated they have the larger Alum spare?

The original reason for the alum wheel in the first place was to save weight for the corp CAFE (read gas milage) ratings. My guess is the TTA was lighter and could save money by using the steel wheel.

actually I've never checked either car. I bought one at a swap meet though but have never put it in a car. I'll look at my tta's tonight. My friend's 87 GTA had one from the factory I know.
 
Hmmmmmmm
looking at my build sheet, my car had "spare tire option N64" and it came with the 195/75/15 tire and steal wheel.
 
Hi All,

This have been a mystery so far, we all have the N64 option on our cars and we all expected the standard aluminium spare that we seen in other cars but we have a spare that looks identical to the steel spare BUT it's aluminium. Check yours with a magnet :-) Mine is defenilty not steel...
