Ok got it; the setup on ours is unique to the cars with steering wheel controls and very hard to find ... have you had it all apart to see if anything is broken (very common with the spring loaded pins) or if they just need a good clean?

The plastic (white part) with the spring loaded pins might be the issue as they do fall apart from age ... I got a used one that looks like its about to fall apart ... and I lucked out years ago and got hold of a NOS one as well as spare for mine.

My steering wheel radio control buttons not working consistently may not be the clock spring. My mechanic found only 0.6 volts going to the circuit board behind the buttons, instead of 5 volts. He soldered some of the connections; if that doesn't fix it he suggests I buy a new button/board assembly.
Regarding the sloppy, loose steering, he replaced the worn idler arm, tightened the steering box, and repacked the wheel bearings. He also replaced the worn bushings (bushes). (The rag joint looked good.) Hopefully that will fix it!
