Engine Rebuilding Cost

I am taking the car to more than one shop to get some rebuilding engine cost.

How much does it cost to rebuild one of these engines on the average, not including doing the head work?

I hope to drop the extra set of heads off at Champion tomorrow to get reworked: They are going to port and polish them and put bigger valves in there also. It should take around 2 weeks to get them back.:cool1:
 
A local buick turbo builder (Turbo Lou) quoted me $4000 for stock specs.

I am thinking about buying my second TTA. This one is a project for sure. I can get it very cheap, clean car fax, Clean interior, minor body repairs, but the engine scares me but I am looking forward to the challenge. The current owner says the car runs, but thinks the turbo is blown. It only has 56k, cloth t-top car. The engine was modified with a bigger intercooler, turbo, heads and cam. ford 9" rear, trans was just rebuilt. Looks like built for and used on the racetrack. The current owner bought it in 08 with 56K on it and has not driven it much if at all, maybe bought it in this condition. I looked at it this weekend. Needs some body work, rear spoiler, power antenna, headlight don't make noise but don't go up or down...typical, etc. no Radio. The car started right up, constant smooth idle, great pressure on gauges, no leaks that I could find before or after driving. But the car felt like it was being driven with the parking brake on. No power. It felt like it was boosting, but nothing over 5 psi. I am thinking it's the transmission but I really don't know. Anybody have any thoughts or run into this type of problem?

Kman - you should be starting your own post to ask those questions instead of hijacking someone's thread.
 
Sorry about that. Just seemed like you guys had some experience with these type of issues. I will start a new thread. My apologies.
 
Also another question. Should you let a shop work on your car that is not a turbobuick shop, but they have experience with other turbo engines?
 
I think it's generally accepted that if you're having work done you want to go to the most experienced person who does that work.

On the other hand, I'm sure any engine builder worth his (or her) salt, could rebuild a 3.8 buick properly if they wanted to.
