Flywheel Dust Cover

Does anyone have a picture of the underside of their car with the flywheel dust cover in it? I need to find one to replace mine. From memory, I think the stock one is metal and it is held on by 4 screws. I found a couple online, a gm plastic one for the 200-r4 and a heavy chrome plated one.

Does anyone have one for sale or know where I can find one?

Do your self a favor and don't bother with it. It's the first thing I take off and put in a box with any other parts for the cars. Those things hold in massive amounts of heat and just boil the trans fluid in the converter. You might find your trans not happy if you put that on!
 
I think Jim clunked his head on his exposed flexplate/convertor :chat:.....put it on, it aint holdin' that much heat.

There are 600+ H.P LS cars with solid bellhousing 4L60e cars having no heat build up problems.

If tranny heat is an issue add an aftermarket cooler.

Can you tell I'm feeling better??????...even a little fiesty?

lol well that might explain why your car is slow! I've never seen a fast turbo Buick running that cover. Trust me there is a huge heat different with it on. Can't compare the POS 200R4 with a LS car with a 4L60E! Not even in the same ballpark when it comes to a transmissions. The 200R4 (along with the rear) are the two weak spots on these cars. And we all know what kills a transmission... heat! So why chance it. Take it off and you'll see the difference when your rolling around the streets in the summer sitting at traffic lights. These cars heat soak too fast not to try every trick in the book! :)
 
There was a thread many moons ago on turbobuick.com about this actually. Someone ran a trans temp gauge and saw 10 plus degree differences and the only change was taking that cover off. I know in the dead of summer when I'm going to shows, if I look under the car when I get where I'm going you can see the heat pouring off that converter! And I drive like an old lady to shows and cruises :) Heat kills let it out!
 
I still say you're nutty for not running one,and I think the 200r4 is an extremely capable transmission and on par with a stock 4L60e(read 700R4), both make heat in the same fashion and both are used similar F bodies.....

The cooling effects would be minimal at best with out one and most people don't put them back on because it's a pain in the ass and the tiny 1/4-20 bolts are usually stripped out.

If you're not running a tranny cooler then you're not serious about controlling the tranny temps....inspection cover or not.

Don't make me bring Jason in on this thread.:boxing:....he's itchin' for an argument.
 
Transmission oil cooler is a must !

However driving on the street I would not take my cover of, too much debri like rocks, branches, cats, dogs and small children that can get cought lol
 
I was thinking ( I know...dangerous...)...could the heat you saw radiating was maybe more related to the header's crossover pipe that is also right there?

Another upside to the cover being in place is contains the dripping/whipped around oil from ALL of our rear main seals and doesn't let it just blow back on the exhaust and floorboard.
It doesn't store oil, because there is a scallop cut in the bottom to let oil collect and drain after the vehicle stops.
 
Remember this summer when your cruising in all the heat, to remove your hoods.

Hoods have been known to trap heat under the hood. :pedo:

Hmmm maybe even remove the turbo as it generates lots of heat under the hood I've noticed :idea5:
 
I drive around all my cars without a cover on. My daily driver TTA does not have one and I have not had any problems. Rich is correct in saying most don't put it on as they are too lazy, that's why I didn't. That and I am always changing converters it seems.....
 
Not having the cover makes it look like some teenage kid's unfinished project. The best thing you can do for an auto trans is a cooler.
