Front timing cover

BuickGN

TTA# 130
My car is is at my buddies right now getting the rope seal changed out of the timing cover. That leaky rope seal made the whole front of the engine like muck over the years. After he cleaned it he noticed that there was no paint on the timing cover. The water pump was black with some flakes coming off. My question is was the timing cover not painted from the factory, was there a recall or was it just changed from a previous owner maybe? Is it supposed to be black?

My orginial looked like you described during the my first tear down.

I prepped mine really good and hit it with tractor paint from Tractor Supply...$$$... Really holds up well after 3-4 years...

Color? Dunno, Jan and the crew will know.

Are we sure the rope seal front cover was original to the TTA? I was thinking it was the neoprene seal.

My understanding is they spray painted the block, oil pan, front cover and water pump however some got more paint then others depending on how quickly they did it on the line ... and the front cover and water pump being aluminium (or similar material) with no proper prep and primer the black paint started flacking off fairly quickly.

Yes rope seal came from the factory.

If you replace the front cover make sure to do a search over on turbobuick.com as there's quality issues with many of the aftermarket "cheap" covers ....
