..........to have some issues. Have only driven the car about 100 miles since the oil change, basically only 100 miles this whole driving season. My TTA has developed a "tick". Noticed it on Thurs evening on the way home from a short drive. It does not tick at start up, only after it has warmed up. I still have good oil pressure and car drives the same. Seems to be coming from the passenger side area closest to the fire wall (sorry, dont know what cylinder that is). My dad and hubby listened to it and we are hoping its just a lifter or something simple. Plan is to remove valve cover and see what we got. Will determine plan of action after that. I am SO hoping its nothing serious as it has really brought me down the last few days.

I know the PO took very good care of the car, as I do; but the first 48,000 miles of her life is unknown.

Any tips or input on what to look for or to help diagnose would be greatly appreciated. THX

Gonna pull the valve cover sometime next week-been hectic around here and dont want to rush it.
 
Hi Kymmee, first did you add Zddplus when you did the oil change? has it been on or off a trailer or anything that would cause the body to flex? it's not hard to get a exhause leak that sound's like a lifter tick, but whatever it is it's nothing to get upset over, a knock would be diffrent... also start the car in the dark to make sure a spark plug wire is not jumping fire.

Yes, ZDDPlus was added. Not been on a trailer, just backed out of the storage box, but its a very small incline like 6-8 inches.

I still have not changed my intermediate exhaust pipe yet (my bad)-it does have a few holes in it. Is that what you mean when you say an exhaust leak? It is definately not a knock.

My dad said I could still drive it, just listen and make sure it doesnt get any louder and yes he said to get the exhaust fixed.

Yes if you have a exhaust leak from the cat forward it can sound like a lifter but most of the time it's louder when it's cold, keep in mind also that these car's are 23 yo and it's normal to hear a lifter tick if the motor has never been apart, you can drive it another 20 yr with the same tick and it will be fine, i don't think you have anything to worry about.... with age hangover's hurt more than they use to and car's are no diffrent...:wheelchair:

LOL -since we're both about the same age I can relate to that. :teehee:

I realize the cars are aged (like us), thanks for the calming advice. I guess I tend to get ahead of myself and was dreading having to do a rebuild or some big $$ repair. Gonna get the exhaust fixed and prob just pull the valve cover to look. I'll report back with results next week. Thanks again Rob.
 
Nothing to get down about. All things mechanical can be fixed. I'm sure you'll find the solution in time and all will be cool.
 
They may have been using a heavier weight oil before. If you changed to a lighter oil it may explain why the tick started after changing the oil. May have a weak lifter.

After reading your post, got to thinking, I did use lighter oil. So today it was drained out (caught it in a clean pail and we'll use it in for equipment, so its not going to waste).

Put 10W-30(thats what it had) in it and another bottle of ZDDplus. Didnt change the filter, NAPA gold 1086, since I only drove 100 miles on it.

Took it for a spin and the lifter noise is way quieter if even there. Before you could hear it inside the car with the windows down. May be a temporary fix, but I'm not gonna pull the valve cover. Also my oil pressure is a little higher now at idle when warm and the car seems to idle a little more smooth. So could be a coincidence but time will tell.
