Well, as an original owner of a 1981 Special Edition Turbo Trans Am, which I still own, and which I have autocrossed it greatly, as well as install nitous, I have about 80,000 miles on it! I have had the turbo rebuilt twice! Now, I have been very hard on this car! Very hard!
I use Turbo City, which is in the city of Orange, California. They advertise in quite a few car magazines. I don't have the address or phone number handy, but I'm sure I can track it down if you really need it!
It is a time consuming process to remove everything, just to get to the turbo. And, of coarse, to put it back together! But I have done it twice! Even though it's a second gen, you will need some metric tools! It can be done!
I have changed the oil every 2,000 miles, which helps with these cars! If you drive it normal (not lead foot), it will last quite a while!
As for cost, I can't really tell you, as it has been quite a few years (like 15 years) since I had to rebuild one.
As for price being right, hard to say! The milage sounds great, paint has always been an issue with these cars, as the black faded on the roof of mine as well! I guess I waxed it too many times!
Rear sway bars shouldn't be too hard to find, but even here in Los Angeles, second gens in the junk yards are getting harder to find.
You may hear lots of people slamming these cars, but they are fun. Fun, not fast! They do handle great in the turns! The WS6 excells over stock!
And the cars look great too! Second gens have always had great lines/looks!
