Intermediate pipe 3" for TTA

Hello Guys,

I recently screwed up and want to buy the 3 inch intermediate pipe that goes from the back of the cat to the muffler. What pipe do you recommend? Does Summit have one that will bolt up to the stock hangars and stock cat (2 bolt flange). I will need that metal hangar peice that hung the cat as well (it's ruined). I am bringing it all back to stock or near stock form.
I seen Hooker has a 2 1/2 inch inter. pipe. I am looking for a 3".
Never again will I mess with my BABY.
 
I went to the local muffler shop because of a small leak at the test pipe. They told me the best way to run this pipe is to weld it to the 3" immediate pipe. So foolishly I listened. They cut the 3 " interm. pipe about 2 inches then welded the new test pipe they made to it. Then they talked me into a Ravin Z55 Muffler, telling me it would produce less resistance then stock.
Well, the muffler went together fine and the both tips look great. However, he welded the 3" and the test pipe together. Then he took the bottom of the U clamp (the piece that looks like a (C) welded it to the test pipe and then he welded it to the metal hangar plate.
It does look bad but... I feel like I ruined a classic. The exhaust was MINT like the CAR till I fu$@ with it. I figured it would give me a liitle xrta HP/TQ. I had the Dynomax SS Ultraflow on mine mind for the last 3 months too. What would you do? I am never seeling so... Should I buy the Walker interm.pipe for the TTA. That have it at Summit for 110 dollars. I still have the stock cat. I will need a need a new hangar too! He welded the piss out of the stock one near the test pipe. I am not do worried about the muffler yet, just the welded pipes. It is not me. I have to have everything perfect. That is the way I am.

If you want it back stock, I think you can probably locate a GM original intermediate pipe. I'm pretty sure that the intermediate pipe for TTA was the same as the pipe for the Iroc-z single cat, Trans ams, GTAs cars. This was the single cat exhaust system. They came out with a dual cat set up in mid 89 that they continued to use, but this isn't the one you want. I don't think the stock intermediate pipe is all that bad as far as flow, nor is the stock muffler that bad.
I've stated in other threads that I still run my car through the stock exhaust from cat back to mid 12 second 1/4. However, I am using a TH down pipe so this helps. When I wanna really cut a rut then I open the electric cutout, picks up probably .5 in 1/4. Maybe check the junk yards or even have a chevy/pontiac dealer run a check of inventory, It wouldn't be completely unbelievable to find this piece new in a dealer's parts department. Good luck with that.:)
 
I'm not sure if I should run with this post or start new but here we go. I just got my 3" downpipe and wanted to run 3" back to the muffler. Nobody ever actually answered if there is anybody selling these 3" intermediate pipes. Anyone??

Like I was saying above, others may want to chime in, but as I recall from looking at the parts book (dad owned operated chevy/potiac dealer back in the 80'-90's) showed that the intermediate pipe from the cat back on a TTA is the same part number as was on 305/350 TPI single cat Iroc Z and GTA/Trans AMs.
You may want to consult your local dealer on this, but I'm 99% that this is the same part. I would then have to conclude that if you get a intermediate pipe/muffler kit from any vendor/summit/jegs or whoever that is selling under the listing of a single cat back exhaust for 87-89/90 Irocz/ GTA then this system will work on our TTA cars. I've seen many offerings from SLP, Flowmaster, summit has their own kit and I think Borla as well. There are MANY as there were a sh*t load of 305/350 Irocs and Gta for them to cator to. Be aware that GM went to a dual cat set up in mid 89 and 90 and then on forward for duration of the 3rd generation cars. The dual cat system is not comapitable with TTA exhaust configuration. Save your money and don't get a test pipe in place of the cat, either gut your cat out or get the replacement piece with the dump pipe installed as in the future you will relize you will ultimately want to run your exhaust open, while your at it get a electric dump/cut out, as everyone on this board seems to be going to this set-up. It rivals anything that James Bond has on his own hot rod and you'll never get tired of zapping the "silly button" for an additinal 50 horse. As you'll see in my sig, I never even bothered with getting a intermediate pipe or replacing the stock muffler as I'm running a Terry Houston 3" DP to a electric cutout. I'd bet money that I'd run with about 90% of anything I'll get next to at a stop light with the exhaust closed, and if it turns out to be a 2007 Zo6, well then I'll have to use my itty butty pinky to hit the "silly button" Also having a button keeps you off the pavement to manually open your dump on race day, you wouldn't want to dirty your pants before your adoring dragway groupies get a chance to see you :rofl: :cheers:

I have the cutout shown in your picture, just haven't installed any of it yet. My muffler has rusted around the origional drainage weep whole. I need a new muffler so I might as well get the intermediate pipe to connect the whole thing together.

The thing with asking the dealer is that I am the local pontiac dealer. Guess I'll have to bug my parts guys to look up the difference between the TTA and GTA. We just got a new parts imaging system that I haven't the slightest clue how to use it.

I did check with summit today. They told me the TTA was different and they offer a 2.5" but no 3". I didn't even get in to the quest for stainless. There must be somebody on here with 3" all the way back. Any help will be appreciated.
 
I found the same problem. I could only find the Walker intermediate pipe at the local shops. $110 I think it was 2 1/2 or something. The Hooker Cat Back was my only reasonable opinion at Summit or Jegs 305 delivered. 3 inch pipe w/ a awesome sounding muffler along with cool bigger tips. Tips went on a little fussy and you will need to adjust the hangars, but I love it. Sounds soooo good on these TTA's. I have heard Magnaflow is great too. Stainless steel for a $125 more. Also, I heard the higher priced Borla makes these TTA's sound ricey. I am not sure though. Hope this helps. But, you will love the Hooker!!!
Take it to a muffler shop because you will need to cut one of the tailpipes 1 1/2 inches to the muffler AND to make the tips line up looking from the back. Joe
