Michigan Authentic Plates

The TTA Is finally old enough to ride with authentic Michigan plates. For those of you who don't know the state of Michigan allows you to register an authentic plate to any car 25 years or older. There are mileage limitations and things like that but it's nothing that really matters. Saves on Hagerty insurance too. The cost to register the plate is $35 and it's for life you never have to Pay to register it again until you change plates.

Last year i put the historic plates on mine. Sounds similar to your Michigan plates you received. Cool plates!!
 
It's a good deal financially. I kind of wanted a plate to match the year of my car. By "authentic", do you mean historic plates? Or 1989 vintage plates? My understanding was that the restrictions were the same for both, and were too numerous for me. And the insurers give you a break on the price under the assumption that you are using the vehicle in a very limited manner, as prescribed by the State for that plate. (The rate for the car is actually the same, but they aren't required to contribute to the Catastrophic Claims fund...no small amount as a portion of the total bill). I didn't want to have to lie (IE: commit insurance fraud) if I was in an accident while using the vehicle for a purpose not described in the State's profile. But for those who can take advantage of it, it's a great deal.
 
I am thinking of going historical next year. I have collector now, but its personalized (TTA15I5) so it runs about $104 a yr. Historical is a one time deal, good for 50 yrs. But if you want "personalized" historical, its about the same renewal every yr as collector. Ohio is so confusing!!o_O Historical limits your driving to shows, events, etc, but AFAIK they dont enforce it here. That's about the extent of my TTA's driving anyway.
 
Years ago my classic/antique insurance company used to send an elaborate questionnaire prior to renewal (they don't anymore), I always wrote that the car would go out just for "exercise" at least once per month (or something like that). They never complained or questioned it back then?
It is kind of strange that each state has its own version of classic/collector/historic/antique tags. In NJ even the personalized historic tags are a one-time payment (I keep telling people that it is one of only 2 good deals found when living here :eek:). Photo last year in that thread...
 
Got my antique plate today. Dodged having to put the emissions stuff and cat back on, I had been registering in another county for the past 2 years, but now I'm legit.
 
Same deal in Illinois, antique plates are the only good deal the state offers. Antique plates are $30 for 5 years once the car is 25 years old. And you can drive with any plate that is from the year of the car as long as you have the antique plate with you. I run a manufacturer plate on mine
 
In Michigan authentic plates are plates the same year as the car. Limited to doing car stuff not really supposed to be used for daily driving. Hagerty discounts for authentic plates. One nice little bonus is that these plates don't register when a cop runs the number. A glitch in the system for years.

Glitch here on the toll roads also since you don't have to inform anyone about using the old plates
 
In MI can you legally use a historic expire d manufacturers plate? I picked one up the same style used on the prototype TTa's so was wondering about this.

That is not correct.

"Reproduction and remanufactured plates as well as authentic dealer and manufacturer plates are not allowed. The plate must display the correct colors for the year of issuance."

As far as I know, Illinois doesn't have that stipulation. I run the manufacturer plate on the TTA and a friend runs a street machine nationals plate on his GN. That's a specialty plate that was only good for a month or so in 87
 
Tell this to the numorous guys I know running them on their 68-70 Mopars. So many people have them I don't want one. It's possible that the rules have changed, but they are still running them. The state wants to get rid of the authentic plates. That's why I got it right away. They are grandfathered in if you already have them.
