oil cooler

Started an oil change on my car today and when I took the filter off the whole shaft behind it came off that holds in the oil cooler. Got it off the filter but there is a lock ring that fell off and I can't figure out where it goes. Anyone have any insight? A half hour oil change has turned into an all day affair.

Hopefully you figured it out, but I think it goes on the back side of the oil coiler to hold the adapter shaft into the cooler. If you haven't reassembled, can you share a picture? I took the cooler off my TTA, but could dig it out of the box and take a look if you need.

I think I figured it out. The oil cooler is similar or the same as the Z28 oil cooler and I found a few pics of it online. There is a cut in the shaft on the oil filter side that it goes into. I was thinking the same thing you stated, that the clip held the shaft onto the oil cooler on the engine side but the pics I found showed it different.
