Rebuilding Console

Have been working on this project, rebuilding a spare console. Found the lower console in great shape with no seperation at the top with the glue coming apart. Putting a good looking top shifter plate on there and also will be adding new switches. The only thing I need is another leather boot put on there.
 
That's a good idea! I had to buy three consoles to piece together one good one for my car. The one I had had a broken ashtray, cigarette burns and broken switches...
 
Looking very good ... these consoles do need some "love" to keep them look good. I got a NOS one years ago for mine that I put in and after just a couple of years the sides started to let go and I had to take it all out and sort it out with some gorilla glue ...

The way GM had these made is not very good having smooth ABS plastic as the shell with no way for the rubbery stuff to grip on to it ... I worked for a supplier to the automotive industry and they did the console shells for SAAB ... for this very reason we used slightly perforated sheetmetal so when they outer rubbery stuff was molded onto it it would stay there and not let go ...

Anyway looking very good !

I am going to use gorilla glue around the top where it could come loose just in case. I used gorilla glue on my original one, clamping it till it dryed and it did wonders. I am a firm believer in this stuff.:dirol:

Exactly what I did on mine as well.

I think with the material and the heat if car is sitting in the sun gorilla glue is the best option ... never had any problems with mine after I carefully glued mine together ... just have to be careful not to use too much of the glue as it expands/foams ...
 
Yes, I found out the first time I used gorilla glue to use only a little.

I used too much and it was expanding and oosing everywhere. I sure did learn my lesson!!!
