Speedometer Wire

I have a 1981 Turbo Trans Am. I am thinking about replacing the 85 mph speedometer with a 160. I understand that I have to replace the gear in the transmission where the speedo cable connects, but what is the wire coming from my original speedo? I has a blue AC Delco box towards the end of it and it was not plugged in. Any ideas? Thanks, Tom

Hi Tom!
I replaced my speedo with a 160 mph speedo! I just was able to use one screw hole, but I siliconed the speedo to the speedo housing! Something else that I did, was to use a speedo cluster and the other smaller guage cluster out of a 1981 NASCAR Edition Turbo Trans Am. Why? Cause they light up in red! Even with the blue backing 160 speedo, everything lights up in red at night!
The blue plug in at the back of the '81 85 mph speedo just sets off the check engine light, which you don't have if you use the 160 speedo!
Your milage will be off, unless you calibrate the two speeds to the same milage. I didn't.
There is no speedo gear change. At least for me. when driving my two cars side by side, the speed was the same.

Hope this helps,

George
