Time to Re-paint the TTA??? Pro's and Con's

The TTA is now turning 22 years old and those that have driven their beloved cars have probably started to think about restoring the vehicle to it's pristine showroom condition and luster, without any knicks, bumps or scratches, and get rid of that nasty yellowing on the plastic molding. I was just wondering how many have had their TTA's repainted and what color they used, how much it cost, was it worth it? Pro's and Con's to repainting. I know the original color is Pearl White, but I think the GM Diamond White with the gold metallic flakes in it would just be awesome on this car to really bring out the gold accents from the emblems. This color was used in the 2005 Pontiac Bonneville GXP and the Cadillac. Or how about changing the color to Black to honor the modified GNX engine in the car? I have heard that 3 test cars were taken off the GTA line for the TTA and they were white, red, and black. VERY RARE. I have only seen one picture on the web a TTA in Burgandy Red Metallic. How would changing the color effect the value of the car? If you had your's repainted, how much did it cost and were you happy with the job? Was it worth it?

I am getting the spoiler replaced with the fiberglass one and the total cost to paint and replace the cracked stock spoiler is $315. I have been quoted to rework/repaint the front spoiler to repair the dreaded front licence bracket holes and the spider webbing at the corners of the fog lights for $200.
 
I think you should leave it the stock color. It is a collector car that should be kept original.
 
I could care less about collector car status and what not, but I do not think the diamond white would look good. My moms Yukon has that color and when it sits next to the TTA it just looks odd.

Others think it would look great though......all in the opinion.

I say do what YOU want! Only problem is that it isn't easy to change back...
 
I say paint it any color you would like, then mine will go up in value another $10. lol Black would be cool though and would look bad ass I think.
 
Mine was repainted a few months before I bought it. I dont know what color, but it was the replacement stock color with 5 or 6 coats of clear on it. It was done professionally, got new emblems, wing, seals, even a new front windshield because it had a nick in it. Honestly, its what sold me on the car. The panels were removed/painted and re-alligned.
 
I'm intrigued at the thought of a black TTA with white door stickers... But I personally wouldn't change the color. It's your car though, you should do what you want while keeping in mind that the resale value will be negatively impacted. If you don't intend to sell it, then do whatever you want.
 
You also need to consider how fare to take it .... bare metal?

And consider replacing all weatherstripping, rubber bits and pieces ... pretty much all of it been discontinued and NOS pieces are very expensive and hard to come by these days.

I had mine repainted back on 2004 but had been collecting parts for a number of years prior to taking it all apart and was lucky that back then most of the parts I needed (all weatherstripping, nose cone and some other bits) were still available from GM but a year or so later and I would have struggled to find all of what I needed.

I would also sort anything mechanical first and make a proper list of what you do need to replace and another list of what you would like to replace before you strip it down.

I stripped mine down as much as possible just to make sure there's no masking needed and no ugly paint lines visible. I did everything at that time except engine bay (did not want to pull the engine however engine needed a rebuild at a later point so then pulled it all and got the engine bay done as well along with all suspension pieces, brakes etc).

Good paint job, NOS weatherstripping and other bits you will be looking at $5-10k easily depending on what needs to be done.
 
If I were to paint mine, and how I feel about it right now, it'd be done in Black and I'd probably try and get the door decals and banner done in a Gold, close to the wheel color.

Kind of a TTA version of the X-Ray GNX.

It may be blasphemy, but I think there are enough of you guys/gals with pristine TTA's that we have perfect examples of them with low miles or completely restored. Enough so that at national level meets we are well represented.

I may paint it (the 69) the opposing Blue color, but it depends on the interior color too.

The thing is, the 85-90 3rd gen nose and body lines lends itself to be painted Black. especially with a tan interior. and gold wheel insert color.
 
A '69 clone would be cool in the opposite colors, blue with white stripes. Much like the one off 30th TA that's been around for a while, dark blue with white stripes. I always liked the look of that car. I think it had white interior though...wasn't crazy about that.
 
I agree...nice paint job. Keep us posted with the updates on the car...It is going to be awesome when it is done.
