Torque Converter Info

Was doing some routine maintenance this evening, have had some drips from the oil pan and transmssion lately, so tightened up the bolts on the pans, some were loose. Anyway, we were checking the main seal for leaks and loosened the protective cover and I saw this written in blk marker on the torque converter. 2800rpms + stall. Can any of you gear heads comment on this? Prob not the stock converter? I always had a suspicion that my tranny was not stock but really dont know. Any ideas about my set up? I have a TA 49 turbo and 009 injectors, red armstrong chip, Scanmaster. Other than that, dont know much else about the car.

Yeah that is an aftermarket converter that stalls at 2800rpm or higher. The stock converter stalls at a much lower rpm. The higher stall is used to let the engine rev up higher to create more exhaust gases to push you aftermarket turbo which is larger than stock. As long as your car is running well and no knock on the scan master I am sure your set up is fine.

A note about the trans pan bolts, be sure not to over tighten them, or the gasket will squish out and leaks will get worse. Of course loose bolts are not good either, just be sure to not over or under tighten.

Thanks for the info jarredsson. I have never seen any knock on the SM. I always had a suspicion that my tranny set up is not stock. Hard to describe, but between 1 and 2 is shifts really strong and squawks the tires pretty easily. The PO didnt have much info on what was done to the car before he bought it.

robertlee, what am I looking for timing wise good or bad?

Kymmee, if you're interested I still have my original orange stripe TTA convertor( I think it's a D5), that is if this higher stall convertor is too slushy for your liking. It's got under 25K miles on it, probably under 15K miles

Thanks WS6 for the offer. For now, I'm going to leave the car as is, It runs and drives good, for the little that I do drive it. Took it out last night for a while and paid more attention to the tach and shift points, so it now makes more sense to me how it is supposed to be driven. (aka pretty aggresively).

I have a 4k stall converter laying around if anyone is interested? I do not know if I would ever have a need for it, but I have it. lol

Is there a list some where that shows preferred torque converter to match different sized turbos?

Thanks. Precision was really helpfully on telling me what I have and recommending a new stall speed.

Can anyone tell me what the stock stall speed is?

Also, to upgrade, what is a good brand to buy? I'm looking for a 2800-3000 stall per precision. ..
