Anyone repaint their intercooler?

Hi everyone. The original paint on my intercooler is starting to peel in some areas. I was thinking about repainting over the winter. Has anyone done the same? Did you strip off the original paint, and if so how. What did you repaint with? Are our intercoolers the same as GN intercoolers? Thanks.

Yep I did, stripped the old paint off with aircraft stripper (nasty stuff) to get it really clean then used Eastwoods radiator black only .... works fine and looks great ... see photos after being stripped, painted then with the new IC scoop (and ID plate) installed ....

I had the one for my 86 GN powder coated. They come out sexy! However I had him clean and blast the fins but did not coat them. I was going to use black radiator paint on the fins only but I don't drive it in the rain or bad weather and it sits in a climate controlled garage so I figure nothing will bother them. But if the car may see rain or stored in a detached non heated garage then I would powder coat the IC and tell them to clean and leave the fins alone. Then just pick up some black radiator paint from Eastwood and shoot the fins your self. Should come out real nice that way and last a long long time! I thought I had some pics of my intercooler after it was powder coated but I can't find them.

From what I understand, our intercoolers are the 12 fins per inch design used on the GNX for better cooling. A regular GN has 10 fins per inch.
 
Thanks for the tips. I think I'll try the Eastwood radiator paint and order one of the new tags mentioned by Jan.

I also stripped my spare when installing the Dutt neck. Aircraft stripper/ aircraft remover is about 15-20 bucks a can. 1 can is more than enough to strip the intercooler. Jan is right, it is nasty stuff. Use it outside or in a very well ventilated area. try not to get any of it on you, it will burn. that stuff works great on a lot of things. Just make sure to clean it off very well after using or it can ruin the fresh paint or powder coat. I am actually goingto polish that intercooler when I am done, But I will be refinishing the original the same as Jan said.

Serial number is unique to the IC ... when you strip it you will see a hand scribled number on it and if you can read it I've been told that is the serial number you see on the tag however I can not prove that is the case. See attached photo of mine ...

I just put 1078 on mine, same as my build number as I could not work out what was scribled on mine ...

Just remember the IC serial number have nothing to do with the cars build sequence number or anything else as they were just put on there @ random.

I suspect some of the original PAS documents would have the IC serial number match to a VIN as the transmission serial number and engine number etc have this but unfortunatly the documents are not in the public domain so I have no idea if that is the case or not.

Might be, bit hard to work out ... would be interesting to see a few others what they say ... the 16570102 looks like a GM part number but the part number for the IC I got (GMs parts and iilustration guide) is 12396761 but that could of course have changed from the production units part number.
 
The last 4 numbers are pretty close to your build number. I guess its like the transmissions and they are off but close in number because they were produced around the same time?
