Radiator core Tag repro!

Does anyone know if someone can repro the "Production tag" on the radiator support? My car finished the acid dip, is now on it's way to the EDP dip....unfortunately I forgot to remove the tag. The acid dip dissolved the rivets which hold the tag.....which is now lost.:sick:
I need help!!! I'm a perfectionist...I need the right tag on their with the right number (which we now have :) )
 
Ouch, that will be a difficult one to find someone wiht the correct dies to do you a new one ... we can help wiht dimensions and photos etc just let us know.

Can't you dive into the big bathtub and try finding it again lol

Pictures of the acid dip process and EDP dip ... and the end result ... please :-)
 
I'll definately need dimensions and pics (hint,hint). I think I'll take my swimtrunks back tomorrow to take a dip:eeks:. I'll try to post some pics of the now and after EDP....might take a few days
 
Yeah - go find that tag. I don't think you can replace it. They must have to drain the tank every so often.
 
It's a 20,000 liter Tank! I rechecked today....it's gone:explosion:

WOW! That's amazing! You need to take more pics and post them up and keep posting pics of this project! I always like to see projects like this come to life! :) Any pics of the car before you started? As far as that tag, I would just go to a junk yard and find one from a GTA and stick it on there. I don't think anyone ever would catch those numbers. Cheaper and faster that way for sure! :) Good luck and keep us posted!
 
wow that's exactly what I would have liked to do with mine if I had a proper sized garage to work in ... so are those pictures after just the acid bath or after the EDP coating?

and yes we do want more and more pictures lol.

Any rust holes appearing ... I've seen some shells dipped and there were a lot of sheetmetal to be replaced.

Not a bad idea to get a tag from another GTA ... you got the number ranges and plenty of other 3rd gen's built in between our TTA's so you might find one that start with the same numbers at least.

The rivets holding them in place are aluminium hence you lost yours ... the correct rivets are found on ebay ...

So if you see someone selling parts off a 89 Firebird ask and see if you can get that tag from them. Car is painted with the tag in place as that was the only way they could id the body until it got the VIN tag.
 
The pics are directly after the Acid bath and drying. The body looks really excellent. No holes. My biggest concern was the rust that was starting at all the edges. Here's a pic from before

That is really good news, you never know what hides under what you can't really see and the acid will do a good job cleaning anything up ... glad they did not leave it in there for too long ... might not have had a "new" shell to work with lol

That will be the best reference we will have to a clean what we call body in white so just the sheet metal.

Good news! I found a company that can reproduce the tag. I just need very detailed photos of the tag....if someone would be willling:poke:

Best would be to have someone with a very clean OEM none repainted car to do this ... I know my paint layer is thicker on the tag as I had the complete car repainted and I can see the paint is thicker with the clear on there so the thickness of the numbers will not be correct ... however happy to take some photos for you during this weekend.
 
It might even be a better idea to get a tag off of a junk car so you know the dimensions and little nuances are exact. Nothing like having one in front of you to make the best copy

Yep and strip the paint off it then use it to get the reproduction one done.
 
Would love to be able to go this far to restore TTA579. How much does that process cost?

Next step for me would be seam welding, and SFCs. THEN seam sealing and paint.

It's probably going to cost a little over $4k. I took tons of pics of all the seams...which are the first in order after the EDP.

I've come to believe that's not an unreasonable price for these kinds of things.
 
Bob, pulled out a photo of my tag but wont help much as the paint and clear coat is too thick for any good photos or get good dimensions of the font used.

I suggest you get one from a wrecked car then remove any paint etc and use that as the "template" to get a reproduction one done correctly.

I did notice that as well when entering all those pages with info over the past week ... theoretically each car off the line would have gotten this number in sequence so don't see a reason why they all seem to be even numbers for the TTAs specially as they were built in batches as Scott explained for us .. let me do some research looking at some other stuff I have for other 3rd Gens (so none TTAs) ... could be something simple like Camaro's had odd numbers and Firebird's even ...

Post over on gtasourcepage.com as well ... I did see a couple of guys on there that parted some cars out.

Also touch base with ttanotchback on here as I think he might be able to help as well.

Can't remember when they started with these tags but maybe 86 or 87 ... and also funny enough not all later 3rd Gen's seems to have them as there's been discussions over on thirdgen.org about this.
 
Cool stuff, I would suggest you use a photobucket account or similar where you can upload and host a much larger number of photos in high resolution (now with this forum reducing the size we loose a lot of detail for future reference).

If at all you could upload in bulk detailed pictures at some time would be great for us to use as a reference ... I love that type of pictures as you all know lol.

I keep my own collection of reference photos too.
