11's on pump gas? Possible? How?

Is it possible to set up a TTA (hardtop) to run only on the street, only with radial tires, and only with pump gas, and have performance similar to that of a 2004 Z06 Corvette? (high 11's, 180 mph top speed) And if so, can this be done without destroying fuel mileage?

I need to drive everyday, and am considering the z06 or older zr1 because it can outrun most anything and has good gas mileage. But I'd rather have a tta. I had 3 of them, (all stock) and the zo6 is ugly. But I need to outrun everyone else for security reasons. Is this possible? If so, what would the parts cost. I can do the assembly myself. I have no interest in drag racing or going to the track. I know these cars can run 9's, I need normal driveability. I could be driving along, and all a sudden I may need full power, and I won't be able to stop and put in racing gas. Top speed around 180 would be good.

I really don't want to have to buy a zo6 or a zr1 but I will if I have to.

If anyone has experience with this maybe he could point me towards a list of mods.

I just need to ask....are you a gov't agent? or rap star?

I really need to know to details of this....

Mine did. I did with an alky kit and 93 octane. Still got 29mpg on the highway with a TurboTweak chip. I ran Nitto Drag Radials all the time though but no problems in the rain.

Mods for mine were PT51 turbo, THDP, 50# injectors, ATR MAF pipe, SLP cat back, Vig 3200 converter, shift kit, among other normal mods. Mine was fairly mild when all was said and done. If you're not racing it, you don't need the converter. Might even want to run taller gears if you want to run high speed all the time.

But the reason given for all this is kind of flakey

I assume your smuggling kittens and or moonshine?
For top end runs, I'd get a zr1. Already fast on pump gas and they made more of them.

I do not think these cars would hit 180 in any short time. Realistically 160...

I sure hope my car can run 11's on pumpgas. I will know it the spring. I also think it would hit 165 before being limited drag and power wise.

Has anyone topped theres out? And don't tell me they hit 171 on Indy because that is a track where you can go WOT for miles.

I would suggest you cut and paste your question and post it over at turbobuicks.com . Those guys will have some advice for you too.

My car has gone 11.20 @ 119mph on straight 93 octane pump gas with no added fueling(alky)or water injection. But my car has a three speed auto and will top out around 140mph so it doesnt meet your top end requirements but with an overdrive trans with a lockup converter it should be capable of well over 180mph.

The top speed on a stock TTA is pretty good, I've personally had a stock one(chip and K&N)to 165mph as read on a scanmaster :) And one of my hardtops was run in the Silver State early in it's life and had top end speeds in the mid 180's. The only mods aside from safety/suspension work was a set of 2.77 gears and blue top 36# injectors.

In my opinion though, for these goals a Z06 or ZR1 would be the better choice.

HTH,
Steve

Yeah I agree you should get the Z06. Besides when something breaks you will be able to get parts anywhere!!!!

From real life experience in personal protection and security, you should look into the Mercedes CLS 55 AMG ('07 CLS 65) With a professional driver/body guard, if you are that woried about your personal safety. The AMG has 500+ HP and capable of +- 185 mph. Also, if you are truly looking for a security/ personal protection auto, There are a few companies that convert and sell AMGs and even train you or your driver, such as RENNTECH http://www.renntechmercedes.com/inkas.html. Just my 2 cents, plus why risk ruining collectible T/A's and vetts?

Thank you for the good advice. I am surprised it can be done on pump gas.

I am concerned about reliability, and I would use a stage 2 block if I could. Does anyone know anything about the new aluminium blocks that are being made? I believe they have 4 bolt mains or 6 bolt mains. I forget who makes them. I don't know if they are stronger than stock or not. I am assuming the only way to get stage two is to find used one.

I am aware of the shortcomings of the TTA as compared to a newer Z06, but I have always preferred to drive a beautiful car as opposed to a mean looking one. That's why I consider ZR1. But I hear they break a lot.

The Mercedes idea sounds great, but I do not know if there is a way to make them efficient. With gas at $3.50 I must make it my main priority. I have even considered getting a front wheel drive VW Passat diesel station wagon (60mpg), and putting a 500 hp engine in the rear, driving the rear wheels. That way, I would not waste fuel cruising down the street. I could just start up the big engine if I needed it. After all, I may never need it. Of course I would have to use it sometimes to make sure it stays running good. These days 500 hp isn't that much. I could get an LS2 or LS6 and add a blower. Mount it transversely and connect it to a front wheel drive transmission. Once, around 1993 someone put a second engine in the back of a Cadillac Eldorado, driving the rear wheels. They called it Dualstar. Two northstar engines, 600 total hp. That would work for my purposes, although it would only get 26 mpg, not 60. Any other ideas?

As far as personal safety and security being a flakey thing to desire, I guess Darwin should have called his theory survival of the flakiest. There are hundreds of victims of crimes that would not have been victims if they could have simply driven away.

If you are talking life or death situations running from the Mafia or something I would only trust a brand new car. I wouldn't even trust a Zr1. These cars are cheap to modify but I would not want to run WOT for miles with them...

Buy a new Z06 and go 199 and run high 10's. All with a 100k mile warrenty.

BTW when I said ZR1 I was not talking about the 1990-1995 version but rather the upcoming 620hp 2009 ZR1 thats due out late summer 2008. Way I see it, if you started building a TTA now it probrobly wont be done before the new ZR1 comes out.

But I wouldnt do a TTA, even with a stage block and everything that goes into a top dollar build I still wouldnt trust it as I would a new Z06 or new ZR1 - not to mention your going to end up spending as much or possibly more doing the TTA when you consider the price of doing a total performance car(motor, trans, rear end, brakes, susepension, fuel system, cooling system, wheels, and tires). Plus the premium price hardtop TTA's bring or the cost of converting a t-top TTA to a hardtop.
