20 Years Ago Today

TTA 1077

Well-Known Member
It’s incredible how much of an impression on ones memory these cars leave. As I started up 1077 today and took her to the Sunoco up the road, I realized that today marked 20 years to the day that the TTA has been in our family. Tuesday May 9, 1989 was the day my parents took delivery of our 20th anniversary Trans Am, from Peihler Pontiac. I recalled the excitement I had throughout the day, knowing by that evening I’d be at the dealer with my parents picking up the most unique and quickest T/A yet. I remember trying to convince two of my school buddies of how bad ass this car was going to be, quoting every stat I memorized, from all the car magazines that ran articles on the TTA since the previous September. I had been a T/A freak as far back as 5 years old after seeing Smokey And The Bandit. I could almost still feel the angst waiting for the end of what seemed to be longest school day of 9th grade. Well, the school day ended and the coolness factor overtook my teenage brain as I sat in the leather seat, new car smell permeating the air. With my mom driving , she pulled onto the road and punched it, the inability to move forward in my seat still sticks with me. The rest would be history!

About 2 weeks or so into owning the car, Mom or dad (not sure who) told a dinner table story about how they beat a late '80s vette that day. The vette owner was so mad they spit chew on the passenger side fender at the next light and took off. 8-10 years ago, my friends and I used to take our bids out (TTA, '70, and my old '94 1LE formula) and hunt down Mustangs all night.
