81 turbo TA allowed here?

Hi everyone,
just found this site and newly registered. Silly question but are there users on this board with the 80/81 turbo ta's? I have an 81 Nascar turbo ta which I have done some mods too and made much improvements. Seems majority here have the 89 turbo ta (which is really nice too).

Let me know if you are out there...I have been alone for awhile with my 301 turbo setup!

I won't speak for everyone, but I will say that this site is mostly about the '89 TTA. Every now and then there will be some '81 posts.

I have an '81 and an '89 TTA so I go both ways.

What have you done to your '81? I rebuilt the motor in mine, upgraded the turbo, the exhaust, the carb, added roller rockers, etc. It is much quicker than it was and runs a lot better.

I have rebuilt the motor as well, straight exhaust (i.e. no CAT), different Qjet, one turbo line capped, timing bumped to 12, etc. Nothing crazy (since it is a pace car and in immaculate shape) but it runs 20 times better than stock. It is a very quick car in my opinion (not a 400 or 455 quick). I am that one in a million person who really likes the 301 turbo setup.

I too, own a 1981 Turbo Trans Am.
I dropped the cat converter, and added NOS.
Not neck snapping power, but I built the car for the road, not straight line quarter mile only stuff.
I would think that less than 2% of the people here have these cars.
But that doesn't mean you can't be here, and join in. Who knows, your next car may be a 20th Turbo Trans Am. :wink:
Not sure if you know, but http://www.transamcountry.com is a nice second gen site where there are alot of turbo owners there.
BTW, I use to own both a 1980 Indy Turbo Trans Am and a 1981 NASCAR Turbo Trans Am.

Mr. Turbota I am curious. Since you have owned an 80 / 81 / 89 turbo ta which one did you like the best? A few years back I had a straight up offer to trade my 81 nascar pace car for an 89 turbo ta. Mine is immaculate and so was the 89. Now I know the 89 is faster than mine and had more luxuries but I really like my 81 and the second gen look, so I declined. I am sure many would say that was a bad decision but I am still happy with it.

I have been in the 89's and they are very very fast!
 
I love my 20th TTA, but must say, it is fun driving around in a second gen.
They handle so much different to me.
But, since the '89 is an anniversary car, I had to have tone too.
Glad I did get it too!

Hi all,

I too have an 81 SE Turbo and an 89 TTA, dont know why just guess that they are a bit rare and hopefully one day the 81 will get a bit more respect. Could be the only person here in the UK with both. What do you think?

The 89 is so much quicker it is in a different class, but your right , the 81 is so much fun to cruise in and gets all the looks!!

I have black cloth, and all I ever seem to see, are the camel interiors.
I would love to get another '81 TTA with the black cloth interior,to keep all stock.

I'm new also, I too own an 81 Turbo Nascar heavily modifed. It would take the world to come to an end for me to part with this car. To have big cube power and a rare good looking car just keeps me all smiles even during cold winter days here in Chicago. Though I admire the 89 Turbo and I tip my hat to Pontiac for having the balls to drop that engine into a Tran Am. I admire mine even more for being the first American produced turbo V8 during it's time. A car and with an engine truly made before it's time. Meaning the world wasn't ready for such a bold move even then.

The fact that the 80 & 81 Turbo Trans Am's are considered the bastards of the great Firebird legacy. I love when I blow by folks and they ask if there is a 400 or 455 under the hood only to watch their faces drop in disbelief when they hear and see it's a 301 Turbo. That is one great feeling and there is no other car or engine that could make me feel any better. I've been wrenching modification wise on this engine for over twenty years, so if anyone needs suggestions or help feel free to email me at [email protected]. Serious 301 Turbo owners only.

So, what mods have you done?
I have dropped the cat converter, and installed NOS. Not ground breaking gobs of power, but she can get sideways in second geear cherps, after frying the tires off the line. :wink:
All my mods are in the interior and exterior.
Have you also checked out http://www.transamcountry.com ?
All second gens over there, and a bunch of turbo owners over there as well.

Hi George

sorry missed this message till now, yea mine is Tan cloth, it is Pimlico cloth med Doeskin color. It is the only cloth that is not available, I have been after new front covers for 4 years, if you see any let me know.

I am on the maillist and message boards there, but never sent in my info on my '81, and I guess not a true member.
I go by WarbirdTA over there, as well as other second gen sites.
Nice looking car!
Looked like mine did, but only the interior color is different.
My car is modded now, and no way looks like a Special Edition any more.
You may get more looks by wearing a big 'ole cowboy hat while driving it! :wink:

Hi George

Yea I know Jan, he was the guy that told me where to buy my TTA448, very helpful guy. I dont know about the hat, but i have always fancied one of those red Jackets, with Bandit on one sleeve and Trans am on the other. Burt wears one in the 2nd film. I believe they come up for sale now and again.

I have asked others, but where is the best place to get carpet from for the TTA448? Jan rekons carmotorsports, do you have any other ideas?

Besides ACC, no.
I haven't seen any from CAR, but a few TTA owners have the stuff from CAR, have said they like it.
I too, wish I had one of those red Bandit jackets.
