A/C Charge or Replace

Both my A/C systems in both TTA's don't work very well and are original. Should I just charge them with R12 or convert them to R134?

Is R12 available to purchase anywhere???


In the TTA #1040/Rayder, the fan for the heat and ac only works on low and high, two speeds. It does seem to heat up but cold, not so much. Any one else have these issue or advice on how to repair? I am having it looked at while the caliper is being repaired just need some pointers what to look for and ask so I get it fixed right.
 
Hey I live in Fla. and it gets toasty down here. I had my ac converted to R134 and it works great, even on a real hot day. A lot of people do not like the R134 but it works and it is easy to get, I got a recharge kit from Walmart and recharged it myself.

Speaking of the fans, I had a bad relay in one of the fans when I first got the car, Replaced the relay and they work good now.

I am not sure what experiences others have had with R134A, but I have tried to convert older cars to it, and I don't think it cools as well. I pulled vacuum, and charged, but I didn't have good results. The older systems do not work as well because they weren't designed for it. R134A is not as efficient as R12, so it requires a larger condenser to work as well. Also, newer AC hoses are different because R134A is a smaller molecule, and will leak through the old hoses. My opinion is to change seals, and receiver dryer, be sure the system is leak free and recharge with R12. Check Craigslist. There are plenty of people selling R12, and it is usually 20 to 30 bucks a can. R134A is kind of expensive now, so the price difference is small, and you will have the proper refrigerant for your car. I bought 20 lbs. of R12 last year for 100 bucks. If you really have problems finding R12, try to find R406A. It is a drop in replacement. It is a blend of refrigerants that supposedly cools even better then R12. There is a thread on TGO about it. I will see if I can find it.
Just make sure you have no leaks. Change seals, and have the rubber hoses replaced. There are local shops that will put new hoses on your old set if yours are shot. Forget about finding a set of replacements for our cars.
 
Kman - also, whatever you wind up using, see if you can get your hands on a vacuum pump or have some one vacuum it for you because that boils out the moisture in the system. You need to have all the moisture out for the system to work efficiently.

Check your compressor for any signs of a leak(oil around the shaft, hose connection, switch connection, high pressure pop off) these compressors like to leak with old age. And if you do convert to 134a it will be a faster leak down.
