Summer in Naples Florida sucks, its about 97 everyday. When I turn on the AC the car will make a noise by the alternator for about 3 seconds and then stops then does the same over and over(intermitent). The AC is blowing hot air(I had it converted about 2 years ago to R134). Does anyone have any ideas? If there is no refrigerant in the system would this cause any of the symptoms.

I'm not an expert on HVAC but it sounds like the refridgerant is low enough that it's cycling the compressor on and off. Probably you're hearing the beginnings of a failed compressor and or clutch...which is also probably why you lost all your gas.

Cheap fix is to have it gassed up again and plow through the summer with your fingers crossed.

Correct fix is a new compressor,dryer,orifice screen and have the system sucked down to check for any more leaks,then put refridgerant oil and new 134A(gas) in it to spec.
 
Thanks for the info. If I have a can of R134 can I do it myself just to get through the summer? I noticed there are 2 places where the hose from the can would fit onto, One with a red cap and the other with a black one. Which one would you use to recharge?
 
If the compressor clutch is engaging and disengaging then your low on freon. Seems like you have a leak if you had it converted 2 years ago. What I would do is take it to a place (you can trust) that has the machine to hook up to the car. You CAN NOT just add a can of R134. R134 MUST have the PERFECT balance of gas and freon or it will not work. It's not like the R12 where when it got hot you dumped a can in for the summer. If you do that with R134 you will destroy your system. They have a green die they can install after they charged it back up and under a black light it will show the leak a mile away. Have it done professionally and have them use that die. Buy a cheap black light at Spencer's or something and check it monthly for leaks. You'll see it. Usually it's around the compressor clutch. I have one of the best AC guys in the world who works on my cars. My TTA still has the original R12 in it and it blows ice cubes and my GN's have R134 and they blow even COLDER then the R12. So don't be scared of R134 it actually cools better then R12 ONLY if it's done properly!!
 
Jim R12 is freon right ... R134 does not contain any freon ... freon is the reason they banned R12 and replaced it with different "none freon" alternatives ...
 
I'm pretty sure there is still freon in it just a much lower amount and R12 has CFC's in it witch are banned in the US. 134a requires MUCH less to cool the same amount of air (hence more energy efficient).
 
Thanks everyone, I'll find a good place to take it to. I appreicate all the great advice everyone gives. You guys are a very valuable resource, especially to someone who does'nt know a great deal about cars-like me. Since I've been on this website I've learned so much from all of you-Thanks!! Are replacement compressors and the related parts still available from parts stores?
