Assie 9 bolt rearend questions

The 9-bolt was in all 1LE cars I believe (I know it was in other third gens) but it came with 3.27 gears in the TTA and 3.23 or something else in the other third gens. People have tried changing gear ratios before in the TTAs but everyone has lost performance, the 3.27s that are stock are the perfect balance between load on the motor and torque off the line. As for parts you should be able to get some at the local auto parts store or you can normally find a used rear on the third gen forums for a couple hundred bucks if you look hard enough.

the 9-bolt rearend equipped the WS6 trans am since 1985 (i think) there are two different carrier; the 2 series posi carrier and the 3 series.
the 2 series is used with the 2.77 ratio and the other with the 2.92, 3.08, 3.23, 3.27, 3.45 and the 3.70, 3.90 and 4.11 ratio

3.23 was a 10 bolt ratio, the Borg-Warner 9 bolt rear axle mostly used 2.77, 3.27, or 3.45 from the factory.
Starting in 1987 G92 and L98(B2L) cars got the Borg-Warner HD 7.75 inch four pinion rear end,produced by GM Holden's Limited of Australia, along with Firebird WS6 cars starting around 1985 or 1986. The LB9/M5 G92 combo got 3.45 gears while the L98 got 2.77 standard and 3.27 was the G92 option. TTA's got the G92 option 3.27 rear. The Borg-Warner rear was dropped after 1989 and replaced by the old 7.625" 10 bolt in 1990.
While this rear was considered the heavy duty option, I think it was the worst feature of the late 80's thirdgens. They really shoulda put the Dana 44 in as an HD option or left the 10 bolt, which may be weaker in stock form but parts are cheaper and more available to fix the 10 bolt and make it quite a bit stronger.
