bad cats

i have a 96 t/a with a 5.7 LT1.Check engine light on and took it to aamco and they say bad catalytic converters then took it to a muffler shop they said same thing.Car seems to run just fine but im sure it will get worse over time. so my question is can i remove them without the ecm tweaking out? i can't really afford them so..i was thinking just remove them and keep the 02 sensers...any suggestions?

I know it's not an issue with the '94 or '95 with the OBDI but the '96 is OBDII so it may be different. You should be able to set it up as an "export" car with a cat delete tune. do a surch on impalass.com or one of the 4th gen F-body sites.
