First my dads GN goes down with a damaged crank and thrust bearing, apparently caused by torque converter ballooning. shortly after, my TTA fell victim to the exact same thing. and now, another local GN has gone down for the exact same reason.

jack of JL enterprises is trying to figure out whats causing this. last i heard his current theory is motor oil possibly. my dad and i both use mobil 1 synthetic. i dont know what was in the other GN. this is apparently a problem with cars using the stock converter.

so, if you have a stock converter, be mindful just in case :)

Motor oil will not cause the torque converter to baloon, converter ballooning is caused by prolonged operation under excessive loading, very abrupt application of load, or operating a torque converter at very high RPM which can cause the shape of the converter's housing to be physically distorted due to internal pressure and/or the stress imposed by centrifugal force. The stock converter, and alot of cheaper aftermarket (so called performance) converters, are not intended for the type of power (abuse) we put through them so your always taking a chance. But I wouldnt be surprised if using synthetic could have had something to do with the thrust problems, as I've seen some strange things happen when using synthetic in engines that were not designed for it, like our little V6's. Also higher than normal transmission line pressures can, over a period of time, take out a thrust bearing.

This was mentioned as possible couse for my thrust and bearings goung south a couple of years back ... needless to say I got myself a brand new converter just in case ...
 
Where is your engine builder finding all the new cranks? As fas as I'd seen they were starting to become hard to find.

How many miles were on the stock torque converters that are ballooning?
 
i dont think he was getting new cranks, just getting the old ones machined.

my dads GN has 30,000 miles on it, my tta had ~85,000 miles on it. i dunno about the other GN that was brought in.
