Boost at launch

Hey guys. What is the best way to get boost at launch when drag racing. I am getting about zero vac. and then the wheels break loose. I have MTDR on the back and still can't hold any boost. I have about 17 # of air pressure in the tires.

Is there anything I can do??? how do some guys leave with 10# of boost??? please help

Jarred.

pump the break pedal to build up pressure and then pull up on the e-brake. You have to slowly build boost, it has to build up some heat. So it's not going to start building right away just slowly lean into the throttle until it feels like it's about to break them loose and then let the boost creep up a little. The most I could build was around 4-5 lbs but I'd spin off the line with the Nitto DRs.

You can also try this trick which I've used before at the track. I got the tip from the Syclone/Typhoon guys. Since the brakes are vacuum assisted and boost is the opposite of vacuum it goes to reason you can't build both at the same time. So...build up some vacuum first, then you can hold more boost. On the strip I'd usually pre-stage (1 bulb lit), put the car in neutral and rev it. This will build vacuum. Press down on the brake and you should feel a difference. Let the revs come down, put it in gear (Drive usually worked the best for me, too much wheel hop in 1st), then start applying throttle slowly while holding the brake. You will either have to have it creep up a bit or let off the brake slightly to stage. Give it a try and see what you think. On the street with regular tires you'd probably end up just roasting the tires but with the DRs you might just leave a big # 11! :burnrubber:

With a 2700 stall and MTDR hot on the drag strip, the best I got it to hold was about 4 lbs. The best 60 ft was 1.85...not great. It still spun a bit. Trans was going away anyway, it basically bit it when I got home. Got a 12.11 1/4.

Well, with the technique described above, stock trans, and some cheap 255s out back that were quite possibly retreads, I pulled a 1.82 or 1.80 60' on a nicely prepped track at Route 66.

Ya ok. So I tried out the technique of revin up in nuetral and braking and then dropin it into drive and building boost. Of course I was on some lonely side road and not at the track, but I did build boost 5#. I think I will go on Friday to the track and test this out. I will stage before the other guy and while waiting for him I'll build boost. I just hope there is enough time to build up a good 5 #'s and not too much time so I don't heat soak my intercooler. I want to see what my car will do, my best is 12.2 leaving the line with 0 boost and 0 vac.
Thanks for the tips guys.
Jarred.

Or heat soak your transmission holding boost on the line. The number one tranny killer IMO. Been through 2 rebuilds in the last 19 years and several visits to the strip. Good luck.
