Sure seems a lot of people living in the past with these old buicks, huh?
I guess it will never stop. I sort of thought the buicks were popular because at the time their advanced technology enabled them to grossly outperform the competition for almost no money input. Now that their technology is obsolete, I thought those people would have moved on to the current state of the art, which I assume is LS v8's with plastic intakes and chinese computers. 640hp showroom stock vettes and the like. But maybe they have changed their focus from state of the art technology to classic car racing. Or maybe they couldn't stomach the new cars. I never got past 1992, myself. Couldn't swallow the new design. Still can't.
I try to live in the past as much as possible but I figured I was a crazy insane antisocial freak because of that. I thought the new thing was honda civics, subaru wagons, and mitsubishi 4 door lancers. And if you have to be a rebel and choose American, it is chevy LS v8's.
But there are enough people doing these buicks to still have sponsors and continuous improvements. Remarkable. It would be interesting to know how much of a decline the buick turbo hobby has had in the last 15 years. it can't be as strong now as it was. Some people must have defected, right?

Yup, it's actually sad what the Buick racing events have become around here - practically nonexistent
A lot have defected, but the Buick still represents a lot of technology and platform that was pretty damn refined. FI in 1987 was very sophisticated. Will always have a special place to me. What I grew up under, inside, and got greasy on. Hell, thats what I was brought home in!

I was brought up before plastic was used for engine parts. I like steel because it is stronger and does not crack. I know there are some short term advantages to the plastic intakes, but GM did not use them for those reasons. They did it because they are cheaper. The same reason they make most parts in china, and to a very low quality spec.
My family members have been stranded in inconvenient and sometimes dangerous places because of plastic intakes cracking, and have spent lots of money getting their cars fixed at places that overcharged them because they knew that with a cracked intake, there was no way they could get the car home without fixing it. Once it cost $1500 to fix, and once $2400. I had to wire money to these relatives becuase they did not expect to need thousands of extra dollars during these trips. All they needed was a metal intake, and the danger, inconvenience, and cost would have been avoided.
Luckily, I recently found a car transport service that will transport a car anywhere in the country, enclosed or open carrier, with only 24-48 hours notice, for a very cheap price. For example, you can call them up, say you need a car picked up in Florida within 24 hours and delivered to New York. He will pick it up and have it delivered for $700 open and $900 closed. On the upper level so nothing drips on it. I found this remarkable, since last times I shipped cars there was a lead time of some weeks, and the prices were higher. And that was when diesel fuel cost $0.99/gallon. So fuel has gone up 400% and lead time and price have come down. Maybe the truck drivers are made in china!
Being 20 years old, you are probably not used to the idea of durable goods. They used to be very common. I do envy your youth though. you should know that youth is usually wasted on the young, and that these next 10 years could be some spectacular times for you. You need to enjoy them to the fullest, and realize that it will be over MUCH sooner than you think. your 20's will come and go so fast you won't believe it when they are over. By the time you hit 30, the years will be going by so fast that 35 will come almost immediately, and you realize that 40 will come in the next instant. God only knows how much faster the years will seem to pass once I crack 40.
