Car is running like garbage, if at all.

Turbooo
hello all, my cars been having some serious problems.

when the car is cold started, everything runs fine. im getting 42lbs of fuel pressure, which is what its set at. however, after driving it for a while, for no reason i can see the fuel pressure drops to around 20lbs, the car sputters, and dies. it always runs awful too. o2 readings when on the gas are extremely low. sometimes when the car dies, it wont start for a while. and when i say wont start, i mean wont even crank. this might be a seperate problem however.

it has a new fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator. does anyone have any thoughts?

what is the new fuel pump? Some of those Walbro's are floating around are jap knock off's and they are junk from what I hear. That could be the issue. Also sounds like maybe a fuse-able link is going bad down by the starter? That could be the dead issue and when it cools down it will start. Could also be coil pack/module issue. I would take a voltage reading at the fuel pump and make sure it's getting all the power.

watch the voltage. seems like a definate electrical problem. not the pump.
check the voltage at the alternator.

well wouldnt ya know... replacing the fuel filter fixed it. the place that used to work on the car, and that supplied the fuel pump a while back said that debris in the filter can settle at the bottom and get stirred up after a while and clog the flow, and after its sat a while settle back at the bottom. i havent had any problems since switching the filter yet.

It's always nice when it's something simple and cheap! :) I had some fuel issues in my GN last summer and it turned out to be a crappy fuel filter. Even if I only put a few hundred miles on the car a year I still change the fuel filter and spark plugs every year! Don't take much at all to clog a fuel filter and with these gas stations that don't keep their tanks clean who knows what your pumping into your tank! You might want to change it again in a few months just to make sure it's cleaned out.

well the fuel filter took care of the biggest problem, lack of fuel pressure and killing the car, but now theres another big one. after driving some and turning the alcohol on and boost up to 23lbs, it runs horrible. it lurches and sputters and is worse than at low boost. low boost isnt all that great either but not as bad. the laptops charging so i havent been able to look at it. might be the coil pack...

Back off on the Alky & work your way up w/boost & alky.

alcohol isnt the problem, out of curiosity i ran at 23lbs of boost with no alcohol, jsut 93 octane. it should have knocked like crazy when i punched it, but intead i only got a fairly small amount of knock and a very quick loss of power and cutting out.

Sounds like your vaccum line is off the regulator. 23 psi and little knock with fuel lacking??? sounds wacked out to me. Reason I ask is that same thing happend to me when the vaccum line slipped off. Do you have a wet fuel gauge to look at under throttle? What is the condition of the injectors? New, original? Is the TPS making contact/plugged in correctly? My car acted similiar when the TPS sensor came loose.

well after looking at the laptop (shouldve done it earlier) the o2s are still plummeting when i get on it. for the record i did check the tps and it was fine. im going to have the voltage to the pump checked, to see if the problems there. it may need a hotwire, or if that doesnt fix it, a replacement fuel pump.

my fuel pressure problem came back, it drops down and the car stumbles when giving it any gas at first, and it dies while idling. -.-

i put it in the shop. they said the pumps getting full voltage. i need to get a replacement walbro 340 in tank pump overnighted, but the place i got one from last time is going out of business and wont answer their phone. does anyone know where i can order one from?

hey thanks for the links, unfortunately turbotweak wasnt answering and cottons performance was out of stock... so it looks like ill be driving my dads GN this weekend >.> :D

well i got a fuel pump from full throttle and had it installed today, its running great now. im glad to finally have it back. only thing is, it knocks more now than it did back when it was hot it seems. that may be me just needting to tweak the alky a little better or the gas in the tank... at least i hope it is. im hoping im back to 100%

Good to hear. whats' the fuel pressure at the rail? Do you have a gage you can watch while you drive the car to make sure the fuel is going up with boost? If not that's the next thing you want to try. Make sure your base fuel pressure with the vacuum line off is good.

The colder it is the more fuel you will need. You make more boost and the fuel is more dense. Back down the boost a few pounds.
