This information cann not be determined from the VIN. You must send to Pontiac Historical Services for the information packet on your car and the car number will come with that information.

I spoke to JIM and this is what he told me.
for 18 years GM has allowed PHS to do all of the historical services on Pontiacs. In all of their wisdom they pulled the dealer invoices on the 87+ cars. THis is not because of PHS being in any kind of disarray, it has to do with GM. Also since Pontiac is the only division with a company like PHS, GM literally tried to physically break into Jims office and steal information as to destry it. Apparently since none of the other divisions have this luxury they did not want Pontiac to have it either...
THere is a battle brewing and I am not sure what is in store for PHS, I would recommed getting any info you can before its all gone.
Now there is one account Ive found of a fella that got his info from GM Canada....... I was under the impression they could/would only do Canadian cars....not so.....This guy had a US GN that was purchased in Florida and they were able to get a package out to him

It is already too late. Received a response from Jim Mattison (Mr. PHS) as follows: " Due to an internal reorganization, the vehicle information on 1987 & newer Pontiacs is currently unavailable through PHS."
He does not state if it is available from any other source or if he will ever be able to help us in the future. Anybody have any suggestions? My personal quandry is that I have info that came with the car that states both #705 and then #706. The person I bought it from never got it cleared up and now I may be too late. Anyone have ,or know anyone who has, either of those numbers? :cry:

There are several people on this site (myself included) who have been keeping track of vin#'s and build #'s. For the most part, low build numbers have lower vin numbers. The first 200 or so cars have big gaps between vin#'s and are not necessarily in order. The later cars seem closer together. I know of several where the build and vin are one digit off, meaning they were sequential. Apparently, PAS numbered the cars as they arrived from GM, and they didn't always line up in sequence(I'm guessing about this).
What are the last five digits of your vin? I can give you a rough idea of your build number(I've hit two right on the nose so far).
Also, John Pearcy, a long-time TTA expert, had a source at PAS years ago. He was able to get build numbers at one time; he still has alot of those numbers. When you call his business, he is the one who answers the phone. Order something and then ask about your number. When I got my first TTA, he told me what I needed, and what I didn't need.
One more source: Biggdogg, who is a member of this site, is selling an info package for TTA's that includes build numbers,tranny numbers,dates, etc. Last I saw it was $300.

With all the problems with GM now, ie low sales and such, I see that they are now on the bandwagon for making money.
They see PHS making money, so why can't they?
They charge $50.00 per vin now.
It would be nice to see if they will sent you you build numer in letter form.Someone looking for their build number should try and find out.

Still trying to determine if my tta is #705 or #706. Going through some of the stuff that came with the car I discovered a wooden-framed document that is about 4"X6", shiny finished paper, with top half displaying the tta logo aside the words "TURBO TRANS AM BUILD NUMBERS". The bottom half says
"Your 1989 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am
VIN 1G5FW2173KL241818
is number

Could this be a real and an accurate document? I know Thrasher doesn't supply or even support these chips any more but I wonder if they really had access to this info when they were in the chip business.

See if you can scan that document Tom. Never heard of that one. I think there was a list floating around out there at one time. They are vin sequential so you could look on the registry and check your vin with others on there to see where you might be.

I was able to get my build number from PHS about 6 weeks ago for $35.

hmmm never saw that before. Might have been when someone had the list some years ago and was telling everyone their numbers. Shame Pontiac didn't number each one. When you produce only 1550 cars you would think a small dash plaque with the car number would be in order!
