Car # Question

I am new to this site and was wondering how it is that more than 1 person can claim to have a certain # car? I have, according to PHS the #308, 1989 Turbo Trans AM, but according to the registry, someone else has it too. Any ideas?

If you got it from PHS it should be the right number. Some people got their car's number from a VIN list, but it had some errors.
 
I think the registry has former owners on it too, but I'm not sure. So maybe the person with #308 is a former owner of your car. Hopefully someone will clarify this.

Wow. That is really interesting. I bought a TTA in VA last week and just got the paperwork from PHS and according to the VIN#, it is #308. Maybe they made two #308's? My vin ends in 5220, how about yours? T-tops and Cloth.

I own a car that is listed on the registry as belonging to the previous owner. I am also listed as the owner of TTA 833 which I sold over two years ago now.
 
The "build number" is just the VIN sequence number so unless GM/PAS had two TTAs with the same VIN the build numbers are unique ... 1550 cars built = 1550 unique VINs = 1550 build/sequence numbers (1-1550).

Oh and I do not count the 5 pilot cars ... with lower VIN's than TTA no 1 of the 1550
 
I have a car fax and know who owned this car; it is not a previous owner that is listed here. Just spoke with PHS and they said I definitely have #308 and if someone else has paper work saying the same thing, PHS says they had to send in the wrong VIN number. By the way it is T-Tops and leather. Will try to post pics soon.
 
Rob, Where are you located? Is your vin # different than mine? I've got the car fax and title too and PHS just sent me the documents too (see pic below), somebody made a mistake somewhere? I spoke with Jan originally my car and vin # when I bought it and he thought it was car #1040 but it was supposed to have leather and t-tops too.

Well I say PHS made a mistake ... VIN '1G5FW2178KL245220 can only be no 1040 ... 308 is VIN ending with 237297 ....

I know this will start a big argument however the VIN sequence is the VIN sequence and 245220 can not be 308 ... heck mine is 1078 and confirmed with a letter from PHS and the VIN is 38 number higher than 245220 ...

So looks like old Jim made a mistake possibly :-) ... I've seen another PHS doc where he claims a very high VIN car was a festival car ... heck it was even built AFTER the race in May :-) So no ones perfect.
 
Thanks Jan for clarifying this. You have the ending VIN correct for my car. KMan, I am located in Newnan, GA. Yes my VIN is different than yours; no 2 VINs are the same. You may want to contact PHS at 586-781-5164. I understand that no one is perfect, but the service they provide is not free.

I agree. Thank God no two vin #'s are the same, that way we can figure this out. I was a little concerned, because I flew to VA and just bought this one on the 4th of April and it is currently in route to Chicago. I will contact Jim at PHS and voice my concerns, especially since i paid $35 for a few copies of information and a little research to document my collector. It should be accurate if you pay for it.

Yes, I agree with Jan, any VIN in the 24xxxx series would be a late # car.

BTW, Kman...New Lenox is where I bought TTA #0130 many years ago! :thumbup:
 
Oh, and my best guess on the mistake from PHS is that both of you probably requested your info around the same time. When Kman's letter was sent out they probably just forgot to change the number on the form letter. Simple mistake.

Yes I agree, My car is #984 with the last vin is 244536
 
Just to clarify, if a car gets sold and the new owner does not re register or email an update I leave it as is. This way we have some info or know some history of this car rather then just delete it.
Once you guys get #308 straightened out I will correct the registry.
 
Just talked to Jim at PHS. He apologized for the error and is sending out the proper documents for my vehicle today. You were right on, Jan. My TTA is #1040. Can you update the registry on the site again for me?

Thanks Jan and Rob. You guys saved me $35 bucks for a bogus document. This site is the best for our group of proud TTA owners.
