CD Players for TTA's

Hi everyone.........I'm just curious, I thought I heard somewhere that there is a GM stereo out there that is compatible with the steering wheel controls for our TTA's.........is this true? If so, which vehicle did it come out of and where would be the best place to find one?

Well I know that the GrandPrix with CD has a different harness. If one were to cut the wires and resplice maybe that would work, but you need a book to tell what each color wire is. Other then that i dont know of any other that will work. Maybe a later year GTA that had a CD player. Try www.Thirdgen.org

Ok, thanks again............I wish I could remember where I read that there was a compatible one.........maybe that's just a "story"
 
Dad owned and operated a Ponitac dealer back in the 80s and 90s. We had several Trans Ams and Gta cars come thru, and I seem to remember cleaning up (I was the clean up boy back then) a black GTA with a digital dash, steering wheel with the controls like our Turbo cars and it had a cd player. I think I saw some at the Pontiac auctions too. This was probably late in 89 cause in 90 they went to the ugly air bag steering wheel. I was going to get one of them, but My dad told me that the were like $800 to $900 back then, so I opted for a fuel pump and HKS boost controller instead. Keep searching, I'm pretty sure this combo existed atleast in some late 89 edition GTA cars

I have a GM CD player that I purchased many years ago, it supposedly works in the 1989 TTA/GTA vehicles. I have never used the unit but it is reported to work as new and is cosmetically excellent. Since I now only own the Prototype TTAs, I have no need for the unit. Guess I could put it on eBay, but I have been too busy to list anything. You are welcome to purchase the unit. Call me directly at the number below if you are interested. Also, for those interested, I have a 3rd generation factory subwoofer system new in the box from GM. This is the same as was used in the 1988 GTAs. I believe it includes a steath type on/off switch.

The paperwork that I have from GM (Pontiac), states that the GM Delco CD unit could be ordered for the cars, but would come without the steering wheel controls. They would not work with the steering wheel controls.
I have heard that there was an aftermarket setup that would work, but that was years ago.
I have seen a few cars with the AC-Delco CD unit installed into GTAs, ever with the steering wheel controls still on the car. The controls did not work the CD unit.
I would love to hear more info on this GM CD unit that would work with our steering wheel controls.

Well, Rich is sending me a unit that 'supposedly' works. As soon as I get it, I'll put it in and see what happens. :)
 
Make sure you post some pics. I was under the impression that no factory radio will work with our steering wheel controls. I've even picked up 4 other radio's that look like the one in the TTA and my steering wheel controls won't work any of those! That is one thing I would love to do. Find a stock CD radio for the TTA. That's the only downfall of driving that car. Gotta have my tunes and the radio sucks and I would never even dare to try a cassette in those old decks! Hopefully it works out!

My TTA has a Monsoon Head Unit from a 4th Gen in it...... ( course I have the factory deck in a box ). I have planned on putting the original unit back in the car, but it hasnt been a big deal to me at all after I got the car. It fits perfectly, but the steering wheel controls do not work on the Monsoon. The previous owner told me he had to fabricate a bracket to allow the unit to mount without changing anything on the car. He also told me the wiring was a plug in application. I havent yet been in there so I havent crossed that bridge yet, but will let you guys know when I do.

Cruthfield has (1) that will fit with no modifications and doesn't protrude out, but the steering wheel controls will not work, with the installation kit it is plug and play, no wiring harness modifications. If you need a model # e-mail me.
 
Pioneer does make one that mounts right in. I see a lot of guys use them in the GN's. I took a CD radio from a 05 Yukon and put it in my GN. Had to get an adapter for the harness and antenna. That should also work in the TTA's. I was doing some research on GTAsourcepage.com and even on there they say there is NO stock GM CD player that will work in the TTA's with the steering wheel controls. I can't wait to hear from 89MNTTA! :cool:

I found the below info on the gta source page:

The MUTE button was especially important because it was the key to the new Delco-Loc radio theft-deterrent system. This button was required to power the unit back up if it was stolen; therefore the radio could not be installed in a vehicle without the steering wheel radio controls. If a thief tried to re-install it in another car, a LOC message would show on the display window and remain there until the MUTE button was pressed. GM brought the RPO U1A CD player on line in 1989 and it became the top audio option for the GTAs through 1992. The UT4 stereo cassette unit was standard until 1990, when the first use of Supplemental Inflatable Restraints, or "airbags" required the deletion of the steering wheel radio controls in order to make room for the airbag, and the stereo was discontinued.

BINGO!!!!!!! I hope the CD player Rich sends me is the one that works! If it does, I'll post the serial #'s, model #'s, and any other damn number I can find for you guys! :D

I use a cassette carrier and use my Ipod, can't cruise without the tunes !!!

it works pretty good.

Like I said, I have a service bullitin stating that if you wanted the CD player for your car, it would come without the steering wheel controls. In other words, a different steering wheel.

Like I said before, I have a Pontiac bullitin stating that the cars could be ordered with the CD player, but that they would not work with the radio controls in the steering wheel, and would therefore come with a different steering wheel on the car.
Other than that, the CD player will wrok in the car, but dead controls in the steering wheel.

Rich did not say "yes, for sure 100% it will work with the radio controls"..........however, he did say that it is "supposed to work with the radio controls".........so, I'm just hoping it does........:cool:
 
I got a modern JVC CD player AND hooked it up to the steering wheel controls :-) Custom job and took me a few hours to figure out but it works fine !!!
