Cold Air

I have been looking at the different cold air set ups for my TTA, Kirban has one made for GNs that looks to be not only well thought out and functional also because of the flex material the pipe is constructed from it looks like it can be made to install and fit nicely in the TTA. I would like to add that the pipe has a smooth finish inside and is 3 1/2 inches in diameter.

Would like some opinions on this before I make the plunge.

That might work but it's for a GN.

Brian from Gbody is working on maf inlet pipes for our cars.

If you could wait a few weeks that would be cool.

I will keep this thread updated.

I used to have mine go all the way through the fender and under the front facia to pickup cold air. It worked great and wasn't hard to do with the extra black hose.

I would recommend a good MAF pipe and a K&N like Mike posted, when Gbodyparts.com got the MAF pipe done that would be what you need.

If you want to play around and move the filter you can get a 3" flexi hose pretty much anywhere and move the filter down below but personally I doubt you will see that much of a difference worth the effort and extra $.

Thanks for the replies folks, I am in no big hurry so I will wait and check out the purpose made pipe before I decide.

My original thinking was to go with a translator and the 3.5 MAF, along with this 3.5 flex pipe kit and it's nine inch K&N filter for the best possible Air flow.

Yep, i'm going to sell my 3"lt1 and go with a 3.5" maf and pipe, or a 4" pipe so i can be like Joe...:poke:

3.5" will be a great pipe. Especially for the members using the LS maf's. I am going to use one as well but without the maf.

It's also nice that you don't have buy the angled boss for the IAC. That's a nice feature.

The 3.0" and 3.5" maf inlet pipes will hopefully be done in a couple weeks. Ahhh winter projects....

Found what I was looking for. A 3.5" air filter with inverted top. Does not require oil like the leading brand. Do some research about oil free filters :) Filter has a synthetic nanofiber media.

I would like to place the top of the air filter against the opening in the inner fender(best place to get the cool fresh air). I will talk to Brian about adding this filter to the kit. I really like the design for the application.

Trying my best to make a quality kit that works flawless and is practical.

Just keeping you all updated.

Thanks guys,

Joe

Only thing to keep in mind is if driving in rain / wet weather you will get water down on the filter from the gap between hood and fender.

There were a fix for the stock setup to drill a couple of holes in the OEM airbox to drain water as they got water in them apparently ...

So just a thought, maybe a shield ontop of the filter?

Jan,

I was looking at the Hydroshield from Injen. There is also a metal shield design. ??

Thanks for all your help on this project Jan.

I like the metal design shield better however the shape of it would most likely still get water onto the filter as it will end up where the shield ends then when driving the filter would still get wet due to air velocity and twists and turns in general. A flatter design leading water away or some sort of bent channel to lead water away might be better?

I don't think airflow will be an issue having a shield just on top of the filter ... there's so many factors involved in optimising the airflow and sometimes shielding it up actually gives a better result comparing to an all open filter ... but would take some serious work to figure it all out.

Where I live we go from what you see in the first picture to what's in the second picture within hours sometime (and yes those pictures where the same day) :-(

Jan is right. Let's make this kit work well in all conditions.

Thanks guys. You are all great.

Joe

This been my thoughts for doing mine ... limited space if keeping all the rest stock in the TTA but should work fine ... possible water issue would have to be figured out specially doing something that looks good and not out of place ...

Anyway this is what I plan to do one way or another:

Thanks Jan. That's what I mean by doing it right. Extra set's of eyes is always needed for applications like this. K&N's design would be the one to follow.

My only issue is that a Cold Air Kit (box) will slow the car down. Same thing it was doing to Buicks. Grumpy has noted this a bunch of times.

Thanks,

Joe

Agree Joe, I would not box it in any more than that as the cooler air from the fender opening as well as from smaller openings behind the left pop-up light is what you like to leave open and get as much air in that way as possible ... doing a smaller shield above were the fender / hood meet for potential water entry would be something to experiment with as water would travel along that whole section when driving so hard to say where it would potentially wet the filter but might not be a big issue really.

My plan is to do the K&N style shield with the rubber seal ... I kind of started on a cardboard template a few years back but need to revisit that project when it gets a bit warmer over here.
