Detent plate for transbrake

Bump.... and I'm in for one.

You guys that may race or race now, will find that your factory shifter woefully lacking. And if you plan on a transbrake for the future this will be a must have piece.

I'm pretty sure after this run they won't be made again as this is a private endeavor.

So this might be a wise investment.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the advantage of shifting manually? I sometimes have shifted from 2nd to 3rd, but I've been letting it shift automatically lately. Or is this for something else?

This is more about making the transbrake more user friendly. And Jason should comment here, but I think it makes it more like a ratchet shifter and eliminate the overshift into OD or neutral.Jason has experience with one so he can testify.

But your right, put her in D and let the transmission shift on it's own is what most folks have success with.

I have trouble when I back up to the box to heat 'em up I have inadvertantly pulled it back into 2nd and if I remember to check sometimes I bump it into OD and not D. Either of which makes for a bad run.

I'm hoping this will make it a more positive feeling shifter.

Why there were no idicators is a mystery to me. Once I saw someone put the 91-92 shifter plate in their TTA I had to follow suit. It's nice to be able to look down and EASILY tell what gear you're in. Especially if you're shifting gears somewhere other than a dragstrip.

FWIW, I used to get wheel hop in 1st if I manually shifted at the strip so most of the time it was "D" for me.

I also put it in neutral, click it down once to get it "clunk" in gear, then drop it once more for drive. Seems to work good for me, but everyone is different!

I never want to waste that possible best pass.

I used to pre-stage, put it in neutral, build up vacuum for the brakes, then put it in drive. Netted a best 60' of 1.82 with stock suspension, some 255s, and a sticky track at Rt. 66.

Here is how this will work.

The manual transbrakes everyone runs in TTA's are activated by engaging 1st gear. In a stock configuration you have to use the button to move out of first gear. With the detent plate you just push the shifter out of first gear (no button needed) and shove it right into D. At D, there will be a "detent" that will then require the button to be used, thus saving you from going WOT into OD, N, or even worse, R!

Any other clarifications I will be glad to answer.

Nice explanation. Now I want a transbreak. How much do you think a transbreak helps you?

And Pm when you get these made and let me know how much $$$ to send you.

The one time I used it the tbrake (stock turbo, old trans, single nozzle still) I went 1.54 on the 60'....I think that explains it. Then I went into OD, and eventually neutral and ended up having a great 60' with a 17.xx pass. That was the one and only time I used the brake.

Gotcha!

I am installing a stage right T-brake. Are the detent plates used for the GN's the same as the TTA?
Gbody parts has them for 28 bucks.

No I think they are different. If you can get one of these I highly recommend it. I have one in my car with the trans brake and I love it. contact WS6 on this forum I believe he had some, maybe not now, I don't know.

I still have a few kits, they are not $28 though. I had to pay a local machine shop set up, materials and EDM costs to make the run of 12 I had made.

I think they are around $77 comes with instructions and hardware, J-rod etc. and are 85-92 F body specific.

The only issue is the J-rod is steel and is heavier than the factory plastic piece this sometimes causes the key interlock cable to not fully return. I address this in one of those threads. If you want I'll find some aluminum round stock and make it out of that. I ran the steel rod, as do the other guys who have bought and installed these. It was only an issue for me for a couple-three key cycles then I lubed it up real good with white grease and I never had a problem again.

EDIT: And the interlock and shifter cable do not go out of adjustment by just removing them from the shifter despite what you may read.

I have one with your name on it here, I also went ahead and ordered some aluminum round stock to make a half dozen J rods to add to the kits and replace anyone's that have already been installed, if they wish.

No extra charge, just a few days more of a wait.
