Engine serial numbers

How would one verify if a TTA motor is original to that particular car?

I was reading some muscle car book, and I think it was about pontiac, (but it could have been another make) and I think it said that after 1968, they had a policy to put the end of the car's vin on the engine. Like the last 5 or 6 digits from the vin.

Did pontiac do that? If so, maybe they still did it in 89?

I think its the last 8 or so of the vin, its on the left rear side of the block, towards the bellhousing. You will have to go under the car to see it. I had mine up on a lift & found it. Hope that helps!!!

Yep last 8 or so of the VIN is on there, if you do a search someone posted up photos of it ... or could been on turbobuick.com

I checked mine while out of the vehicle and mine is numbers matching.

The transmission should also have (not checked this just what I've been told) the last 8 of the VIN somewhere on the driverside I beleive.

Each engine also had a number assigned @ PAS (or from GM but appears on the PAS documents) but not sure where this would be if engaraved or not on the block ...
