exhaust question

What is the purpose of the flex (basket weave) tubing on or exhaust right after the downpipe. Has anyone changed it over to hard pipe?? Someone told me it was because these motors shook so much but that dosent seem right to me...I'm all ears throw some knowledge

They were supposed to reduce vibration but like you i don't see where its a big deal, after i installed a 3" Jim Dunn d/p i didn't notice any difference...

It was one of a number of things done to get rid of some serious vibration issues they had. If not necessarily they would not have spent the extra $$

The vibration issues came from weak eng mounts, Just remenber that old fuel pumps , eng mounts that didn't meet the needs don't mean that i need this.. just a thought.

The vibrations came mainly from how they initially had the torque arm from the rear axle to the transmission mounted at the transmission end which took some time for them to figure out and put the project on halt for some time way before production where approved

So from what you're saying is that new engine mounts MAYhelp with the shaking/vibration? Like I asked before about the TTA shaking, goodness!
3 questions for you guys.....
1)mine has 29k miles and seems to me the mounts could be in need of replacing (no the engine don't lift under accel). What brand/type do I want? Robert, I noticed you have a engine bracket/turnbuckle to keep that beast in place, I don't think I need that!
2) Are the left and right mounts the same?
3) Brand and type for the tranny mount?

Just want to go through it and change the things that could be worn/shot. Or am I being anal. Hell, I'm new to these. It's not my GTA that's for sure!

Thanks
Bob

Did you ever install the upgrade's from T.T ? the state of tune seems to be a big factor, the more mods i do to #818 the smoother it gets.. the TR-6 ignition is the way to go if you want it smooth as a babys butt, although its not cheap.

Santa is bringing all that stuff next week or the week after. The wife asked and I told her. She gave me the green light; very supportive. THEN I have to find the time to install it. The items are:
Pump with Hot Wire Kit
Injectors, 60 with 5.7 TT Chip
LS1 MAF and Translator
ScanMaster 2.1

And now your saying that a TR-6 Ignition @$445!!! Yikes, I will wait till May for that! Birthday gift.

$1100 for now will be fine.

:jaw: I guess I forgot something, obvious.

Well now...I should head on down to a corner in Huntsville and pimp myself out for that!

Fun sure is expensive.

robert lee,
Seen Newnan on your location; my brother/sister-in-law live in Griffin.
and I ordered my 2000 Ram Air from Hennessy in Jonesboro.
Just babbling.....

If your stock ignition is good, coil and ignition module, along with plugs, the TR6 probably is not going to help idle engine vibration. The TR6 shines at WOT and high boost which is where the shared coil concept of the factory ignition begins to fall short, but we're talking 24+ # of boost and running in the low 11s. The tune is going to be the biggest plus to smooth things out, and if your MAF isn't reading right that LS1 and Trans+ will definitely help. The stock MAFs seemed to have a lot of calibration issues so the idle fueling was all over the place. So wait just a bit before you decide you need a TR6 for that kind of $$.

Sorry Jan i should have been more clear, the reason i made that statement was the technological difference between 1989 and now is like night and day, they did the best they could with what they had to work with, i have found that if you eliminate the source of the vibration the rest is sort of null and void, you rode in # 818, did you feel any vibration ? I will stand on rooftops and shout that the powerlogger is the best thing since sliced bread and tomato sandwich's , leaps and bounds ahead of what they had then.. if you know what you are looking at...:chat:

Bob. I'm no expert but mine shook like it was running on 5 cylinders until I got the turbo tweek chip and injectors. Was super impressed dealing with him. Customer service was unbelievable for a guy with a full time job and doing this on the side.
