Fast and sudden corrosion

I had Razor's alky kit on my car for over a year and my pump always looked the same. Now that I put my pump back on, it looks like this after about a month.

What in the world?

Haha... Well, responses like that are never a good sign. I will email him that picture now.

I called him today and asked him about it. He checked his email, saw the picture, and had about the same bewildered reaction I did when I saw it. He said he has never seen a pump corrode anywhere near that badly. He said the only things he could think of that might cause that are battery acid leaking or alcohol leaking onto it. I do have a small leak at the tank hose which could be causing it. I will check out the battery too.

I forgot to update this I guess. Apparently this is what happens when you put the mounting screws in backwards and the threads push on the battery. You can see where the battery was discharging to the screws. One screw was half gone from the corrosion and my pump is dead as a doornail. I ordered a replacement last week. Lesson learned I guess. I am at least getting an updated pump with a shield they've started installing on them to keep it from getting waterlogged. That's what killed my last pump before the battery did.

Dang, how did I not see this...

Definately the battery...the first battery did this on my car as well. Had to strip down the entire area and repaint it to avoid rust...Please do this or rust will start in the tray.

Lemme guess, this is/was a Delco battery?

My guess is that the screws didn't puncture it either...

Both of the Delco's on our familys trucks failed too like that.

I don't remember the brand but I'll have to look. I don't think it is though. The battery was not punctured, but it has a dark mark on the bottom, above the most corroded screw. I don't blame the battery, I blame myself for putting the bolts in upside down and basically having the battery sitting on the threaded end and not on the tray.

It's an Interstate battery BTW.

Good call on the battery tray, it's getting some rust on it. I think I got a can of anti-rust spray still around.

Take it down to metal, coat with anti rust, and repaint! Glad you caught it early.
