First pace car with out mods.

A very good friend of mine is a corvette guy and he has an 86 vette indy pace car. He seems to think that his car was the first to pace the indy 500 with out mods. Does anyone know if the 1986 corvette had mods and if so what were they?

I don't know, but it's funny you bring that particular car up. A good friend of mine had one. Back in about 1992 or so I raced him on a 1/8th Drag strip. Both mostly stock. My mph was 85mph, his was 79mph. However he beat me to the line, his reaction time was better and I spun a bit. Good question, Those cars had some good power, I think they would run 145mph stock from what I remember from the mags back then. His had the stickers and was yellow like this one:

Says that the 89 TTA was the 1st that didn't need to be modified in the TTA brochure. Is there anything stating that on the 86 Vette?
Line'em up I don't think an 86 Vette has a chance in hell against my TTA!

Thats the one. Except Jeff's is a deep red. I think the TPI motor was rated at 230 hp.

This was discussed a few years ago on one of the Corvette forums. At that time, the consensus was that the Corvette was modified.

I seem to remember something or somethings on that vette were modified as well.I also recall the corvette guys trying to keep it under wraps just so they could claim the fame of the only and first one.

Post this question up here http://www.turbotransam.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4064&highlight=reunion maybe he will know!

The 78 Vette was the first "non modified" car. It was a production car that was blueprinted, just like the 86. But that in itself means that it was modified.

The TTA was just a regular production car that was the pace car. Just lights and camera mounts were added. No mods to either the drive train or suspension were done to make it a pace car.

That's exactly what I was thinking too Rob. I remember reading somewhere that the '78 Corvette didn't need to be modified, but the motor was balanced and blueprinted. My guess would be that they did the same thing with the '86.
