fuel gauge stuck on full

I know I had about 1/8 a tank when I parked it. I started it for the first time this season and the gauge is reading full...WTF?
Anybody have any insight?

I jumped out the connection behind the tank and the gauge went to empty. I added gas and it stayed in the same spot. Out of desperation I even gave the tank a few whacks to see if maybe float was stuck. It looks like the sender is bad.
Is that a dealer part?
While I am digging in to change the sender, I guess I will change out the fuel pump and maybe add a hotwire kit.
I don't think I will get to this soon...the wife has me painting, putting up crown molding, etc. There is never enough time. I guess I will have to guess how much fuel I have for a short while.

Rock auto has the sender unit for about $100.

I checked that out. There is a Dorman brand and a Spectra brand. Not sure which one is better. I have heard that the Spectra repro gas tanks are a nightmare. I don't know if that is a sign of their quality in other parts. Original GM sending unit is over 400 bucks. Ouch!
