G8 collectability

TTA 1077

Well-Known Member
I went down to the Pontiac dealer, probably for the last time:( I had a Look at the G8's. They had their last ones, 3 GT's a GXP and 4 six bangers. The G8 has grown on me a little and I got to thinking, with the rebates and incentives should I bite the bullet, strugle some for the remainder of the year and get one? Basicly I'm thinking investment, park it and wait and see. This is the end of a brand I figure. I had the salesman run the numbers on the Firehwak thinking 250 numberd modles and that's it, so that would be the most desireable, not to mention 500HP. That was way out of my range, nearly $800 a month. The GT is actualy affordable for me, followed by the GXP. What do you guys think about the future collectability on one of these? Is the Juice going to be worth the squeeze on this one, or should I wait for somthing else?

Like anything else they will only be worth ALOT of money if you bring it home from the dealer plastic still on the seats and stuff and never ever drive it, just keep it in the mothballs for 15-20 years.

Seems kinda a waste to do so theres alot of other investments you can make double your money back on in 20 years.

Neverminding that, I don't know that this car will have much of a collector market in the future being it wasn't all that great of a seller to start with. For the price I'd much rather have a Solstice GXP.

Buy a car because you really like it, not for an investment. Think about those very low mile TTA's you can buy right now for around 40k. Original cost around 32k plus dealer markup, plus storage costs for 20 years, plus insurance, plus maintenance.........

No way to tell...my gut reaction is that they won't be very collectable...people don't want to buy them now...why would they want to buy them in 25 years?

But frankly, you're probably better off waiting 5-10 years before buying one and letting somebody else take the hit on depreciation.

My want'n desire is to bring to Woodward Ave Dream Cruise this August.. a .. what you guys would call a G8 Sports pickup... or Commodore Ute.. . the best looking.. best performing 500hp vehicle that GM could have in its line up right now.. . and drive it up and down Woodward.. just to annoy and think what could have been.

In the meantime.. regards the G8.. careful.. . as something is in the wind... its EXTREMELY.. EXTREMELY..EXTREMELY.. EXTREMELY..EXTREMELY.. EXTREMELY..EXTREMELY.. EXTREMELY..EXTREMELY.. EXTREMELY..EXTREMELY.. EXTREMELY.. likely.. that you have not seen the last of them....
.. Trust me....

I would drive it (4-500 mi per year) it's a car and cars are meant to drive, I wonder how many of those less than 100 mile GNX's will even start anymore? I thought of Rodimus' idea for the solstice GXP, 700 units with a sequential vin, but in the end 2 seats won't serve my needs, thats why I don't own a vette. I just figured I'd get some other opinions before I sink a good chunk of change into something. Who thaught 40 years ago a chevelle would sell for $20k+.

From some other sites I follow they mentioned that the Solstice GXP & G8 GXP would probably be the most desirable as far as collectibles down the road. For me, the G8 GXP would be the choice. The most powerful Pontiac ever produced, big brakes, upgraded suspension, and room for 5. I've talked with a few dealers and with current incentives you can get a GXP for around the $33k-34k range, which is the sticker price on a G8 GT. Of course, that's the price if you're bringing either cash or your own financing. Want that GM 0% for 72 months? Tack on some more $$$$ and it's yours! There's the rub. :wall:

In general - new cars are not good investments. Especially if you buy it new and take the hit of $8,000 when you turn the key.

Even with your Chevelle example - take that same $3,000 dollars in 1969 for that Chevlle, and put it into the stock market. The rule of thumb is that your money doubles every 7 years. Do the math on that. It's no contenst.

Seems GM is still serious about this all.. and the G8 will still lite up the streets.. Per Lutz's comments below in todays NY Times.

Only hours into his latest tenure at General Motors, Bob Lutz was back at what he does best, namely, slipping product information to the media and giving enthusiasts a reason to believe in the beleaguered auto company.

Asked about the future of the Pontiac G8, slated to end production with the 2009 model year, Lutz told Automobile Magazine the car would find its way into Chevrolet showrooms under the Caprice name.

"The last time we looked at [the G8], we decided that we would continue to import it as a Chevrolet," Lutz said. "It is kind of too good to waste."

CEO Fritz Henderson has repeatedly denied that the G8 would survive as part of another brand, saying he's "not a fan of rebadging."

But Lutz, citing export agreements with Australia and the fact that the Holden Commodore is already sold in many countries as a Chevrolet, assured us GM would not let the car die.

They can't seem to get together on this one. First it was going to comeback as a Caprice, then only as a Police vehicle, now not at all again. This is what happens when we allow the government to dictate who runs the company, and what they build:furious: Why the hell is Lutz the putz back anyway? He and his SUV's were some of the problem that got GM into this mess! So much for the new GM, more like the same old same old!

read the 3 columns on right, stating with the bottom one!

I believe Lutz is retiring at the end of GM's fiscal year this coming year..so 8 more months??

GM is so messed up. Right now my wife and I each have a G6 for our daily drivers. The G8 was going to be our next car in to years, and the another G6 or a vibe. Now with the state of GM it looks like we will be buying from someone else.

Keep in mind a Soltice Hardtop if you can find one... if you can justify it.. they look to build around 800 before they are cancelled forever.. sure to be a collector car as time passes.
