Has anyone painted their car black yet?

I always thought the black gta looks about as good as a car can look. I always thought that if my tta needed a paint job, I would go to black. Has anyone done this, or seen someone who has?

what do you think about doing it? (I mean to a car that has bad paint)

Doesn't the world need a few black tta's?

Yes I know it is "wrong", but if I saw one for sale, I would buy it for the same price as a white one. there might be other people who think the same.

I would make special emblems with the white sections changed to black, so they look correct.
 
If my car needed a complete paint job I'd probably do it in Black....blasphemy I know.
 
Geez guys, this converstation really makes me want to do it. I have been thinking of this for while now. I bought a Black firehawk just to curb my urge to paint TTA 733 black. I like the black and gold trans ams with the bird on the hood, like they did on the 1986 T/A's

problem is you'd have to pull the motor and paint all the engine bay and door jams.....

that would be an expensive paint job...
 
OK I just called the paint shop and spoke to the owner. He said everything in the engine compartment has to come out to do a good job. He also siad I'd have to remove all the stuff like the ac/heater box, brake booster, motor etc etc. Then he said it would take atleast a month and cost atleast $5k for two coats of black and two coats of clear. He did not mention any wet sanding so I don't think that is included in the $5k.

He said it is a pretty big deal to change color like this, alot of work for the car owner removing and replacing stuff. I am pretty lazy so I may just continue to dream of a black tta...
 
RAYDER, TTA #1020, will be painted GNX black with some metallic in it in the spring. Just trying to decide if it will be a black convertible too. Just got it back from my engine guy and it is a beast now.

I was thinking of a case where the car needed the paint anyway. do a good job. Strip the trim, etc. These cars aren't that hard to strip. It goes pretty fast. With 1555 cars, and almost no black ones, I don't see the harm. If you look at a perfect, straight, black gta with no bondo, and a nice wetsanded lacquer paint job, it is hard to imagine a better looking car at any price. Especially if it is a hardtop. The black paint hides the ttops, though, so it is not much of an issue if you have them.

So what was the big deal when I repainted my TTA so that it looks like white diamonds sparkling in the Sun!!! That was a $14,000 paint job. Was supposed to be $7,000-$8,000 but got royally ripped off. Be careful your fasteners aren't stolen and replaced with incorrect like what happened to me.!

I personally think you are changing the car too much painting it black, it is too much and not even close to the original. Personally if it was okay, I would paint it a metallic purple!
 
Andre, I'm curious, how would you have the emblems made custom? I am going to install a new set of repro emblems and see how they look. The only one I am going to change is the rear tail emblem to the black and gold one. The black and gold one i am using was original on TTA 613 and I didn't like it and put a repro white on on and love it. Nice having two cars with interchangeable parts.

Lynn, i have not seen your car in person, but in pictures, your car shines better than museum quality TTA's..... Now I know why... $14k, you could have bought another TTA for that much. Wow sounds like a bait, switch, and robbery at the same time.
 
One thing I learned a long time ago is not to be influenced by other peoples opinion. If your gut tells you to do something-do it.

Lynn, so what if you painted your car non OEM? Its your car, you have the right to do whatever you want with it. I do feel that 14K was a little much. but once again, its your $, choose to spend it as you wish.

K-man, I gotta give you credit for going outside the box and doing something different. I suppose its easier to decide since you have two TTA's. Your tribute idea is very original and you will have a one of a kind automobile. This country would be in a lot better place if people were not so judgemental. Just my 2 cents.

Paint it whatever color makes you happy...it's your car

Just don't let MTV pimp your ride with X to the Z Xzibit
because it be the first TTA with a coffee maker or fish tank in it...

when i repaint the GN im going to paint it black ... lots of blacks have brown in them an when the sun hits it just right it has a brown tint .... I did have the black black paint code I lost it .... just a hint
 
Yeah, I'd think it would be too expensive to turn an original TTA black - and do it right with the whole engine bay, jams, etc...

Best to get a black GTA and make it into a mock TTA.

Either way, a black TTA would be a very hot car.
 
I would just change the white parts of the emblems to black. (Like gta emblems, they are matched to the color of the car)

I'd probably do it with paint. A very small brush. IF that didn't work, I'd send them to a place that restors old Cadillac emblems from the 1940's. Those emblems are made the same way. But, in 70 years, the deteriorate, and people restoring those cars send them away to the cloisonne restoration guys. They will make it any way you ask for. Gold plating, chrome, whatever. Plus any type of paint or design too. You have to have the old emblems to start with. They strip down to the casting, then repair it if needed, then put the epoxy paint in there, then do the plating. Sometimes the plating is first before the paint.
