Hatch pull down trouble

What does it mean when the pull down for the rear hatch just makes a clicking noise and doesn't go up or down. Is the motor bad or does it have to be rebuilt or replaced..

Does the motor run continuously? If it does, I hear that there is a nylon gear that wears out inside the pull down assy. You can still purchase this gear from GM.
