The Trans Am was selected to pace the Indianapolis 500, and Pontiac marketed another pace car replica. This special, 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am (TTA), based on the GTA, was only available in white with a tan interior, and came equipped with the turbocharged Buick 3.8L V6, originally developed for the Buick Regal Grand National. At the time, these replicas were as close to the actual pace car as any replica previously offered; the only differences between the replica cars and those that actually were on the track during the race were the additions of strobe lights and safety equipment to the latter. 1,555 were produced, 5 of those being test cars. Out of 1,550 cars produced by PAS, the actual pace cars were randomly selected and sent to Indy for testing and modification, and when the TTA was released to the public, they were underrated in power. Not all came with T-tops or with leather interior; there were hardtops and cloth-interior cars. But every TTA had an automatic transmission ? the 200R4. Still, the TTA was, at the time, widely regarded as the fastest production car in existence ? ironically a title it had briefly (at least for 1989) usurped from its GM stablemate that had supplied the engine: the Buick Regal Grand National (although as noted above, the LB9/N10/MM5/GM3-equipped Formula was quite possibly a close contender as well). The five test TTA's, because they were for pre-production use, were pulled off of the assembly line without regard to color, and therefore were not necessarily white. At least two of these test cars were sold to private individuals, so there are at least two extremely rare, non-white, factory TTA's in existence; in fact, one is known to be red. Only three convertible TTA's were built by ASC, one of which was bought by the president of PAS, with the other two falling into private hands.

Isn't that car in Pontiac collection somewhere? I don't think it ever sold. I remember seeing pictures of it at one time. From the woopin it took testing it, it might be worth much! :cry:
 
More misinformation. Just a story that sounds interesting....and the Pilot Convertible was owned by a wealthy Mexican oil baron, Right!

All of the five(5) Pre-Production Pilot Cars were WHITE Exterior, four(4) T-Top/Cloth and one(1) Hardtop/Leather. The number three(3) Pilot Car was reconfigured into a convertible by ASC per the direction of Jeff Beitzel. The #3 Pilot Car was orginally a T-Top/Cloth configuation, used for a display vehicle in the Los Angeles and Las Vegas Auto Shows, along side the complete display engine. The other two convertibles were dealer re-invoices to/from ASC, and sold to customers as new. Both of these were originally T-Top/Leather Cars from the 1550 Production.

Here is one of the convertibles. Picture was taken in CA, but the car is in PA now. All original with 8600 miles. I am the second owner.

I believe the one of the owners of CARMOTORSPORTS owns a convertible & the red pilot car you speak of.
I also believe he also owns the PAS records.I talked with him one day.

Lenny you should try to hook up with Jim for a photo shoot, Jim's really a nice guy :-) Jim, Lenny is the person I told you about getting the convertible to PA.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I live in Nazareth, not next door to Philadelphia, but not to far. The car was purchased from Victory Pontiac in Bellflower. The original owner lives in Lakewood. He and his brother are well known car collectors and were friends of Otis Chandler. Along with a lot of other documentation, I have the original newspaper ad by Victory Pontiac. The re invoice price was nearly 40K!
 
OK, I know the car now.
It belonged to Otis Chandler at one time.
I met Otis's brother at a car show. He said he talked Otis into buying it.
I had my car right next to his, at a Pontiac Show.
I took a first place, and he took second place.
If you have a copy of my book, Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 1969-1999 Photo Album, you can see the car pictured on page 76.
We talked for quite awhile, and he didn't know that it would be termed a "dealer" conversion, not a factory conversion.
I think he was more bummed that he lost to my car.
Again, very nice car!

Aha that's the one (CA plate INDY TAC) .... by the way George my book some one managed to scrible with a black marker on the inside front cover :angry: Guess I have to get a new one at some point :rofl: Hope things are good in AZ, have to try to come visit again been way too long.

Hi Jan!
Things are going good here in summerland.
We have been in the low 100s for about 3 weeks now.
Slowly climbing as the summer comes on strong.
I have rearanged the garage again, and added quite a bit of things to it.
Pouring some concrete (yes, but I start around 5:30 in the morning, as it does get alittle to hot to finish it during the afternoon;)), and redoing the roof on the house.
Even planting some trees.
We even got a harvest of apricots already this year.
Who knew they would grow out here in the desert?:)

Very nice car & welcome to the site. I like the original ad for it. Now the rumor, is a third one exists???

What kind of documentation do you have from the actual purchase? Was it all bought on one invoice with the conversion broken out?

Since the original owner is a long time collector, he save every piece of paper related to the car. I have the GM window sticker showing it as a T-Top, dealer convertible re-invoice and contract showing all the numbers. The price of the car alone was $38833., then adding the doc fees, sales tax, service contract and license fee bringing the total to $42749.77
 
And I got my picture with it now! Well my big a$$ is blocking most of the convertable but I can say I was there! :WOOT: :WOOT: Lenny that car was awesome!
