Knock problems continue

so long story short the engines out and mostly disassembled. my replacement crank showed up today, and im going to try to take that and the engine up to jacks tomorrow. are there any sensible upgrades i can do while ive got it this far apart? any improvements to the short block? i dont know how much power a stock engine is good for.
so far the only thing i have planned is poly motor mounts. i was kinda thinking about it before, but now with the engine out and seeing that one of the mounts wasnt in good shape, why not.

I don't have any shortblock tricks per say, but I did spend considerable time getting that rear main seal sealed up properly.I bet I spent an hour on it alone.

Also be sure to set that thrust bearing after initial torque. The dipstick tube does not have an O-ring seal where it goes in the block. I waited to install it last and used GM's part sealant to seal it up after it's bolted up top. I let it cure overnight before touching it.

And if you're using a double roller chain take that tensioner off or you'll find it chewed up in the pick up screen...or worse. Run the chain sans the tensioner.

yeah but its been a few months and will probably be a while more before i have to pay for anything. i just want to know my options. it may be worth upgrading something while its open.
