I can't seem to get an answer anywhere so I'll try with some of you seasoned racers.

My question is this, what is accepted and NOT accepted in the way of a fire extinguisher in order to race at an NHRA track?

NHRA rules only mention minumum 5 lb "systems" and I don't know if that means a simple extinguisher or an on board,plumbed, fire supression system.

I mean, can a simple 2.5 lb "clean agent" extinguisher pass a NHRA tech inspection? or does it have to be a 5 lb bottle with typical "caustic agent".

I have had a fire ext. mounted between my backseats for about the past 18 years or so. Of the 2 dragstrips I've raced at, I never had tech even mention it. But they never look at most everything when I pull up. "it's just an old 80's firebird, he'll be lucky to hit a 14 sec et" so they wave me on through
I should have a drive shaft loop according to the rules and bead locks as well, I think.
 
Maybe so, but after watching those techs at National Trail go over a car I figure chance favors the prepared. I'm pretty sure they asked to see an extinguisher. They also went ape-shit on the helmets. And they denied the use of laptops.

It's my understanding that NHRA tracks are extremely fussy about the rules.

My home track just about lets you drink bottled beer going down the track.

LOL, I'd be scared to know how farked up some of the guys I've raced have been...on who knows what. Saturday night after about 9:00, it's curious how many empty cans start appearing in the trash cans and under trailers...
I get a buzz from the antisipation of WOT, that's enough for me.
 
One grudge night they were running through the trucks,these guys had been waiting awhile for the bikes,imports,FWD,animals and the rest of us to get wittled down.
Apparently they were drinking pretty good and is customary they throw the empties in the bed of the truck...soooo, it's their turn and of course to make a 18 sec pick up run 17.9999 you need to drop the tailgate.
Sure enough a few bottles come flying out and continue to for about 200 feet thereby shutting the track down for 30 minutes to clean up that mess.

As I said our track is pretty forgiving.

Rich, for National Trail, they want a fire extinguisher for there own reasons. NHRA doesn't need a fire extinguisher until you atleast need a cage. FWIW, they don't even care if the fire extinguisher is bolted down.

I will have mine sitting on the floor just to pass tech. A fire extinguisher on the floor is more dangerous in my eyes like that then not having one...

Also, DO NOT BUY HALON. NHRA/IHRA just banned it.

That is the fire extinguisher we have in the GN. Very, very sweet piece that would still allow a laptop stand and it can't be "kicked out" of its holder.
