Noise at start up

Anyone have a rattle sound for the first few second of starting the car after not running it for a few days? It's been like this for a long time, no better no worse. Otherwise runs fine and strong. Kinda like a few second of oil getting somewhere, a knocking? (I do run the correct AC1218 filter)

When I switched to synthetic oil it started to happen, I went back to shell rotella no noise at all at start up. What oil are you using??

I have a lifter that does that clatter noise for a few seconds. then devolves into a tick below 1700 RPMs.

I'm just going to run it till this fall and open it up then. Hopefully nothing catastrophic will happen till then.
I would be interested in a oil/viscosity change if you guys think that's helpful.

You can also try a quart of lucas oil additive, around 12 bucks for a quart. my buddy's car did this but not after he added that.

Everytime I start my car after it has been sitting I either unplug the computer, or pull the fuse for the fuel pump, and crank it till the oil pressure goes up. Then I start it, and it never makes any noise at start up...

I do not use synthetic and now that I think of it the idiots that changed my oil the last few times probably are putting in 10w-30. I'll change it myself next time and I'll try the Lucas additive. The lucas fuel injector cleaner is great and I use that every few tanks and it does seem to idle smoother. Thanks.

For buiding extra oil pressure before starting after long sits... just curious... will using a not VATS key crank the engine without starting it? Anyone ever try it?

The non VATS key would allow you to build oil psi. with out strarting the car. Then you would have to wiat 5 or 6 min. befor the car will start with the VATS key. IMO it will work.

I had mine converted to Mobile 1. Has anyone else converted theirs to synthetic? How do you feel about the conversion to Mobile 1. Car has 26000 miles on it. I went with with a 10 weight instead of the 5 weight to keep the gaskets in good shape.

I guess I'm an idiot for not using synthetic and using 10w-30. My car doesn't make any strange noises either.

Lucas oil additive will stop the dry starts anyway.

the syn. and conv. debate can and is beaten to death but here is my .02.

I change the oil in my car every 500 miles or so. I use Shell rotella which still has the additives are cars need. I would be throwing away money with synthetic. Our cars were designed on convensional oil too.

Rotella DOES NOT HAVE the additives anymore..

They switched to the new CJ4 forumla which does not have them...I am now running the Brad Penn oil which still has the additives.

I still have some of the old I guess, I bought 2 15gal drums a while ago, only about 5 left. I did not not know they changed it. Where do you get the other oil??? Thanks

Yeah the old oil is fine. I just ran out of my supply. I too bought a bunch of the Rotella.

I bought mine from here. Zim's Autotechnik Brad Penn Oil - The Green Oil

I purchased 24 quarts of the 10w-30 and received it in 3 days. The first batch they sent me had the wrong viscosity and they next day aired out the correct oil and sent me a shipping label to return the other oil. Great customer service! The shipping was very reasonable at $15 and the package weighed 52 lbs.

That oil is packed full of the additives. You don't even have to run STP or Lucas with it..That sealed the deal for me because the additives in a bottle aren't cheap and the oil comes out to about the same price as the rotella.

This was the info I was thanking you for. I did hear some different views on vr-1 on tb.com

I meant to say 10w-40.... I normally use SAE30 or 10w-30. The weights probably don't make that much difference. From what some people have posted it sounds normal to have a little noise after starting from not being run for a bit. So this forum thread helped... at least now I don't think there is some major problem lurking in the near future...
I recall using some oil additive about 15 years ago with it for a while and it seemed to make a difference... not sure why i stopped.
